Greetings! |
Mark your calendars - the next few weeks have plenty of opportunities for learning about global health issues. The Universities Allied for Essential Medicine are hosting a Duke-UNC expert panel discussion on the issue of making university innovations available in developing countries on September 29. On October 2, Stephen Lewis, of AIDS-Free World, will be giving the University Seminar in Global Health, speaking on the burden of HIV on women and children in Africa. On October 1 and 2, the Duke community has the opportunity to hear Ezekiel Emanuel, chair of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the NIH and others speak at the 2008 Boyarsky Lecture & Symposium about reforming the health care system in the U.S.
We also bring your attention to a paper to be published in tomorrow's issue of JAMA, co-authored by DGHI member John Crump and Johns Hopkins physician and ethicist Jeremy Sugarman. They address the need for guidelines to address the ethical challenges inherent in short-term global health training and volunteer programs.
As always, this newsletter also offers information on funding opportunities for research and education in global health, opportunities for service, and a calendar of other global health events. If you have information you would like posted in this newsletter, please email Marsha Green at marsha.green@duke.edu. | |
