Greetings!

September has brought amazing opportunities to learn more about global health.

We were delighted that more than 100 people were able to attend our first University Seminar on Global Health of the academic year last week. If you were not able to hear Mark Ottenweller's discussion of the challenges created by the epidemic of AIDS orphans in Africa, we invite you view a video of highlights on our website.

In the coming weeks, there are plenty of other opportunities to learn about global health, from the CFAR Fall Scientific Retreat on Sept. 17, to the Playmaker Theater's production of "In the Continuum," a performance about how AIDS affects two women in Africa and the US. Each performance of the play (Sept 10-14) will be followed by a community discussion.  Here at Duke, there are opportunities as diverse as joining with students for the kick-off meeting of the Duke Global Health Working Group, or hearing Hermi H. Hewitt discuss the triumphs and challenges of nursing education in the Caribbean. Check out our full calendar of events below for more opportunities.

Here at DGHI, we have welcomed five faculty members who have been elected as new DGHI Members. We also join others at Duke in welcoming Sandy Williams as the new Senior Advisor for International Strategy.  We are also delighted to share several items from our colleagues in Tanzania: a recently published research paper from Nathan Thielman and his colleagues arguing that monogamy is not as protective against AIDS as the "ABC" policy might suggest; and the extraordinary experiences of Grant Smith, a Hart Fellow who is grappling with the roll of westerners in Tanzania as he assists in launching the Duke-KCMC Women's Reproductive Health program.

We also draw your attention to some upcoming deadlines for funding opportunities - from the
Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Explorations, to the Provost's Common Fund.

As always, if you know of other events or opportunities that should be in this newsletter, please contact Marsha Green at
marsha.green@duke.edu.
