Greetings!
Duke Global Health Institute welcomes the
class of 2012 to Duke. We hope that many of the newly arriving students, as
well as returning students, will take advantage of the many opportunities in
global health that Duke offers.
This newsletter introduces a few of these
opportunities, from free membership with the Global Health Council, to the
first University Seminar on Global Health by Mark Ottenweller, Global HIV/AIDS
Coordinator for HOPE Worldwide on September 3.
We also invite you to read more about DGHI's
work overseas, in this case, a short article about ongoing research in Tanzania on
using social networking to increase the number of people being tested for
HIV/AIDS.
As always, we also include
information on new research and education funding opportunities, calls for
abstracts, and upcoming events. If you have information you would like to see
included in this newsletter, please email Marsha
Green ( marsha.green@duke.edu).

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEW:
Using Social Networking to Fight AIDS
Nathan Thielman and his colleagues are testing the use of
social networking in the fight against AIDS. Not the newfangled networking of
YouTube and Facebook, but the old fashioned form of face-to-face referrals.
Read more about their recently funded research project titled: "VCT-PLUS:
Enhancing VCT to Improve Case Finding and Access to Care in Tanzania."
NEW: Health and Human Rights Journal Now Open-Access Online Format
Health
and Human Rights: An International Journal is now in an open-access online
format. The inaugural edition, under the editorship of Paul Farmer, is

Mark Ottenweller, Global HIV/AIDS Coordinator for HOPE Worldwide, will
give the first University Seminar on Global Health for the 08-09 academic year

one hour meetings designed to stimulate informal dialogue between the speakers
and students. Contact Michael Russell,
( michael.g.russell@duke.edu)
for more information and to join the mailing list. Space for "Global
