Greetings!

We are delighted to announce that Mark Ottenweller, Global HIV/AIDS Coordinator for HOPE Worldwide, will be the first speaker in this year's University Seminar on Global Health on September 3. This year, we are expanding the series to 10 speakers, and are organizing informal meetings between students and speakers to encourage more dialogue.

We also draw your attention to the first in a new series of profiles of our DGHI members. This series will highlight the variety of global health research accomplished by these faculty members. The first profile introduces Brian Wells Pence, Assistant Professor of Community and Family Medicine and the Center for Health Policy.

As always, we also include information on new research and education funding opportunities, calls for abstracts, and upcoming events. If you have information you would like to see included in this newsletter, please email Marsha Green (marsha.green@duke.edu).

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

University Seminar on Global Health
Mark Ottenweller, Global HIV/AIDS Coordinator for HOPE Worldwide, will give the first University Seminar on Global Health for the 08-09 academic year at 4:30 on September 3 at the John Hope Franklin Center.

The University Seminar on Global Health series connects Duke students, faculty, and staff with world-renowned global health researchers and experts and facilitates a multi-discipline and cross-campus dialogue about important global health issues.  The monthly series is sponsored by the Duke Global Health Institute and the Duke University Center on International Studies.  Seminars are held on Wednesdays at 4:30-6 pm in Room 240, John Hope Franklin Center.

In addition to the 4:30-6:00 seminar, DGHI is organizing "Global Health Conversations" - one hour meetings designed to stimulate informal dialogue between the speakers and students. Contact Michael Russell, (michael.g.russell@duke.edu) for more information and to join the mailing list.  Space for "Global Health Conversations" is limited.  For more information about the University Seminar on Global Health series, visit www.globalhealth.duke.edu/seminars.

Q&A With Brian Wells Pence, DGHI Member
Brian Pence describes HIV/AIDS as a disease of the disenfranchised. He is particularly interested in using his epidemiologic skills to investigate how mental health and substance abuse influence the ability of people living with HIV/AIDS to cope with their illness.

Duke Fulbright Scholars Include Global Health Researchers
Seventeen Duke University recent graduates and graduate students have received Fulbright scholarships. Many will be studying global health issues.
