Greetings!

As January draws to a close, global health efforts at Duke continue to flourish. In this week's newsletter we highlight the new Duke Travel Policy, an opportunity to help raise money for women's health in Kenya, an invitation to get involved in Duke's first Global Health Week, new summer service opportunities in Durham and Ethiopia, and much more.

In such a wealth of opportunities, we'd like to make a special invitation for you to mark your calendars for two opportunities to learn more about improving health locally and globally.

On February 9, Dr. Dennis Clements, a member of the Duke Global Health Institute, will participate in the Carolina and Duke Consortium Conference on Politics of Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean. He will be part of a panel discussion on how politics and culture affect healthcare for the Latino population in Durham.

On February 14, DGHI and DUCIS welcome Dr. John Bartlett at the University Seminar on Global Health. He will give an update on his experience with the Kilimanjaro HIV/AIDS Program in Tanzania.

Both events are free, but registration is required.

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEW: Duke Enacts New International Travel Policy
Duke's New International Travel Policy has been enacted to ensure a consistent set of travel standards for all members of the University community. The site includes specific information for undergraduates, graduate & professional students, staff and faculty travel. The policy includes a list of restricted regions to which Duke will not send undergraduate students. Because Kenya is currently on the restricted region list, DGHI is following the policy and not planning to fund student travel to Kenya at this time.  We remain in contact with our Kenyan colleagues and look forward to re-establishing a strong student presence again in Kenya once it is safe again for student travel.

NEW: Duke OB/GYN Hosts Blue Jean Ball Fundraiser for Women's Health in Kenya

The five initiatives include the Predict and Prevent initiative, to identify emerging threats early; the Inform and Empower to Improve Public Services initiative, to improve the delivery of basic services to the poor in India and East Africa; the Fuel the Growth of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises initiative, to help lower their investment transaction costs and create opportunities for small- and medium-sized enterprises; the Develop Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal initiative; and finally, the Accelerate the Commercialization of Plug-In Vehicles initiative.
