The deadlines for summer opportunities are coming soon. We have highlighted below some of the deadlines and information sessions, as well as a new resource for finding DukeMed alumni involved in global health outreach.

We also continue to offer resources for funding and educational opportunities.

DukeMed Alumni and DGHI Outreach Website

If you are looking to get involved in volunteer medical outreach in the U.S. or around the globe, the Duke Medical Alumni Outreach website is a great place to start. Information on the site includes not only the name of the alumni, but also a brief description of what type of outreach is offered, where, and whether financial aid is offered.

John Bartlett to give next University Seminar on Global Health

We will post the videotape of Mark Rosenberg's January 10 University Seminar on Global Health about "Traffic Deaths in Developing Countries: The Perfect Plague" as soon as possible.  Meanwhile, mark your calendars for February 14, 2008, when Duke's own John Bartlett will speak on his experiences in Kenya.

Duke Global Health Student Action Committee Grants

DGHSAC will host Duke's first-ever Global Health Week March 23-29. They are offering grants of approximately $250 to students and organizations with a creative idea to get students involved in the global health culture on campus.

Service Opportunities

NEW: New DGHI Opportunities

Duke Global Health Institute lists service opportunities organized by the Institute, as well as service opportunities offered by other centers, institutes, and organizations.  Recent additions to the website include opportunities in Togo, Africa. DGHI Summer Fieldwork Letter of Interest due January 31.

NEW: Duke Engage Information Sessions on Faculty-Led Projects Jan 16-24

Duke faculty will host information sessions Jan 16 - 24 to discuss their envisioned DukeEngage projects for this upcoming summer.  Deadline for group applications in Feb. 15, 2008.

NEW: Hart Fellows Info Session Jan 16

The Hart Fellows Program offers recent university graduates a ten month fellowship with international humanitarian organizations. This year DGHI is sponsoring a Hart Fellow for a 10 month placement at one of DGHI's partner organizations followed by a 2 month residency at DGHI. Online Resource

Each week we highlight an online resource for global health. This week we highlight the Kaiser Family Foundation's "Key Facts: Race, Ethnicity and Medical Care" update.

This 2007 update serves as a quick reference source on health disparities. The report includes data on the uninsured and access to care by race/ethnicity as well as information about the disproportionate effect that specific conditions such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS and asthma have on racial and ethnic minority populations in the U.S.  New in the 2007 Key facts are demographic data on the racial/ethnic minority population in each state.
