How do we know afterschool programs work for our students?  Meet Darrius Shaw, the Texas Youth of the Year for Boys and Girls Club.  Raised by his great-grandmother in Oak Cliff, Darrius attended the local Boys and Girls Club since he was 6 years of age.  The staff and volunteers at Boys and Girls Club served as his extended family, mentors and tutors throughout his youth.

A graduate of Townview High School, Darrius is now bound for NYU's engineering program with $50,000 in scholarships.

Oh, The Fun We Had Learning This Summer!


So much for kicking back and relaxing during these long, hot summer months.  Dallas AfterSchool Network and its member providers know that the 10 to 12 summer weeks away from instruction and reading takes a toll, causing a lot of students to actually regress academically.  The cumulative effect of this "summer slide" year-after-year creates two-thirds of the academic achievement gap between low-income students and their more advantaged peers.

 DASN Sends 500 Students to the House of Blues... to Learn History!
Think the House of Blues nightclub is just for adults?  Think again.  Thanks to a new House of Blues Foundationpartnership between the International House of Blues Foundation and Dallas AfterSchool Network, more than 500 Dallas-area students were invited to the HOB this summer to learn...history!

Get Up and Give! Day - Please Support Dallas AfterSchool Network
Wednesday, September 8th from 7AM - 7PM is Get Up and Give! Day North Texas.  All contributions made to Dallas AfterSchool Network through DonorBridge at this time will be matched.   Currently, the Communities Foundation and others have raised $650,000 in matching funds, with another $50,000 from the Dallas Foundation as prize money.

Please help Dallas AfterSchool Network keep students safe and on the path to graduation by expanding our support to the nearly 30,000 students DASN serves.

Save the Date! Lights On Afterschool Bus Tours
Bus PhotoMark your calendars for our 2nd Annual Lights on Afterschool Bus Tours on Thursday, October 21st from 4PM - 5:30PM.  We will be offering guests a choice of three different neighborhoods to visit.  Each route will visit three programs:
  • Pleasant Grove (Camp Fire, Thriving Minds, Wilkinson Center)
  • Richardson (Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dallas, Neighborhood Service Council, Richardson ISD's 21st Century PACE)
  • West Dallas (Junior Players at Anita Martinez Recreation Center, Trinity River Mission, West Dallas Community Centers, Inc.)
RSVP for Lights On Afterschool.   See first-hand the impact that afterschool programs have on students, families and communities.  And find out what happens to the tens of thousands of students unsupervised each day afterschool due to lack of affordable programming options.

DASN Is Moving to the Wilson Historic District!
Thanks to the generosity of the Meadows Foundation, Dallas AfterSchool Network is honored to be moving into a house in the Wilson Historic District this fall.  We look forward to serving afterschool professionals from across North Texas in this historic building located in a neighborhood with many other nonprofits.  DASN will be moving into our new home in late October or early November.  Our new address will be 2902 Swiss Avenue, Dallas, TX  75204.  Come see us!
