Love Languages
The Power of Unleashing Potentials
Website Quick Links
Greetings!

Love is in the air! Can you feel it? Can you see it? Can you hear those sweet nothings being whispered in your ear?

As it is nearly time to devote a day toward Love, this month we're looking at an article about Love Languages. It is always interesting to me when I speak of Valentines Day to clients and friends, there is a large number of people who are Anti-Valentines Day.  I understand not liking the commercial aspect of this holiday, but a day towards LOVE! Who wouldn't like that?

If you do or do not have that "special someone" in your life, you have one of the most important people in this world - YOU!  You can give yourself extra special permission to treat yourself that little bit extra special all month long!

And, with your NLP skills, if you or someone you know is anti-valentines day, open up your skills of altering submodalities and lets get a little more love flowing around this world!

Now, briefly about the ABNLP over the past month. Our new website is nearly done and will be launched soon. It has better navigation qualities, easier event registration, quicker search functions, and will be a lot easier to manage behind the scenes!

Also - our annual survey will be sent in the next few weeks. This always helps us to know more about you and how we can better serve our members. Keep your eye out for this in your inbox. It will only take a few minutes to complete.

Heidi HeronIn the meantime, will you be our Valentine?

All the best,

Love Languages

As NLPers, we know that each of us has a clear communication style based on our representational systems (VAK). Did you know however, that we also have a love language? I like to think of these in terms of strategies - the recipe of love, whcih is unique for each of us.

Dr. Gary Chapman identifies these as the Five Languages of Love
  1. lovelangQuality Time - Attention, quality conversation, time spent together doing something meaningful or enjoyable. Time is Love. Attention is love.
  2. Words of Affirmation - "You are beautiful". Words of acknowledgment, encouragement, or appreciation. "You are a giving, loving, kind, warm person. I love who you are". Words of affirmation are words of love.
  3. Gifts - From big to small. Flowers. Gifts. Cards. Cars. Houses. Jewelry. Stuffed Animals. Clothing. A gift can be a great gift of love. Some people feel most loved with a gift.
  4. Acts of Service - Cooking dinner, washing the car, running an errand, cleaning the house, helping with a task, time spent in contribution to another.
  5. Physical Touch - Affection. Massage. Making love. Of course, everyone has their favorite way to be touched. And, touch equals love to many.

As one NLP Presupposition points out: When you know better, you can do better. Knowing these 5 Love Languages allows you to GIVE and RECEIVE love from others more fully. Of course, we all can appreciate and enjoy each "love language", however there is typically one or two that make you feel MOST LOVED.

Which one is your primary love language? How do YOU show love toward those you love? What we tend to do for others, is often a clue to what we enjoy receiving most.

If you express love in a way your partner doesn't understand, he or she won't realize you've expressed love. Perhaps your husband needs to hear encouraging words, but you feel like cooking a nice dinner will cheer him up. When he still feels down, you're puzzled. Or, maybe your wife craves time with you -- time away from the kids & TV. The flowers you gave her just don't communicate that you care.

In this month of love - if you haven't read this wonderful book, please do! It will help open your world to brand new possibilities!

The Five Love Languages is avaliable at Adyar Bookstore for $19.95 - remember your members discount of 10%!  www.adyar.com.au

The Power of Unleashing Potentials by Dr. L. Michael Hall

The ABNLP encourages continuous learning, and when possible we like to let you know of international NLP and Hypnotherapy trainers who reach our shores.

unleashedTwo years ago I wrote Unleashed, a book about self-actualization.  The focus is on the how of self-actualization.  How do we actualize our highest and best?  And of course, my inspiration for it all was the vision of Abraham Maslow who set forth the initial vision:

"Every baby has possibilities for self-actualization but most get it knocked out of them.  I think of the self-actualizing man not as an ordinary man with something added but rather as the ordinary man with nothing taken away.  The average man is a human being with dampened and inhibited powers." (174)

What is self-actualization?  It is being fully human.  It is being an ordinary person with nothing taken away from you!  How about that?  It is get over, and releasing, anything and everything that interferes with us growing to full maturity.  It is releasing everything that dampens and inhibits our powers.  It is as Carl Rogers put it, being a "fully functioning human being" or "becoming a person."

This vision of self-actualization by Maslow and Rogers was not about becoming extraordinary.  The vision is to become everything that you already have the latent potential to become.  That's different.  That's why it is not about adding things to you, it is about reclaiming all that you already have.

In the 1940s Maslow began his "Good Human Beings" research, looking for people who were psychologically healthy and who developed the full range of their potentialities.  This eventually grew into his modeling of self-actualizers.  By 1950 he had developed a paradigm shifting model about human Motivation and Personality (the name of his 1954 classic).

At that time, this was absolutely revolutionary.  No one had studied psychologically healthy, productive, and actualizing people before.  No one had explored the bright side of human nature.  This was cutting-edge.  Eventually it led Maslow to write his third book, The Farther Reaches of Human Nature.  What was so revolutionary about this?

Namely that Maslow was asserting that there is a certain sense in which these extraordinary, whole, healthy person is the only genuine representatives of human nature and psychology.  If the self-actualizing person is not an ordinary person with something added, but an ordinary person "with noting taken away," then the self-actualizing person is a full human being.  This is then a description of the regular or ordinary person who has been unleashed from all of the man-made restraints of society, the human being without "dampened and inhibited powers and capacities."  This makes the self-actualized person synonymous with human nature in general.

For Maslow and the other pioneers of the human potential movement, being creative, authentic, unique, and self-directing was part and parcel of the farther reaches of human nature-it's what within us already.  It only needs to be unleashed.  No wonder that he constantly asserted that "human nature for centuries has been sold short!"  There is within all of us a tendency, an "instinct," and a predisposition to actualize our highest potentials.
