"To joyful moments and a well remembered past."

Christmas music playing in the background, the aroma of cinnamon sticks simmering  a top the wood stove. A clear blue sky prevails, with sun beating down on freshly fallen snow.  Chick a dees darting back and forth between our oversized rhododendron bush and my bird feeders, and our golden retriever Star and her 6 pups resting in our boot room come "nursery" within view and earshot of my desk where I sit to scribe this my Christmas Newsletter.

This is the idyllic scenario I found myself in when I first started in on this newsletter and it is that kind of moment  I want to embrace, to hold onto, to stay with me, so that when I feel the frenzy coming on, that it will guard against such consuming and taking me to that frantic place that we can so easily find ourselves in at this time of year.

And so, by sharing this with you, I am finding a way to hold onto "it" and to let "it" carry me through; as I recall the joyful moments I have had and further anticipate this Holiday Season.

These are a few of my favorite things

Our Christmas Room

Singing and Celebrating

For the 3rd year in a row now I have enjoyed participating in Christmas concerts as a contributing alto in the Androscoggin Chorale.  This year there was the added pleasure of singing with a children's choir that truly offered the sense that angels were amongst us. As is tradition, our Christmas concerts end with a selection of carols which the audience joins in with the chorus' and in this way we end the concert, leaving ALL, participants and audience, fully infused with the Christmas Spirit and at one point reducing yours truly to tears. Hardly a first.

Over the years we have opened up our homes in Canada, Thailand, Taiwan and now the States, hosting Christmas parties full out with Santa Claus (appropriately arriving on an elephant in Thailand), goody bags, crafts and singing. Although, as the children have grown, the flavor of the parties has changed, the joy of filling my home over the Holidays has never dissipated.

Thus it gave me great pleasure to offer our home as a venue where my fellow chorale members could congregate and celebrate the "success" of receiving and giving joy through the art of singing. (What great incentive to have the house fully decked out for the Holidays!)  I enjoyed preparing my traditional contributions of a trifle and a "hearty" eggnog (Moose Milk) with the rest of the fare prepared by my fellow singers. What a wonderful way to mark the end of our Christmas concert season.

Christmas Treats and Sweets

What Christmas would be complete without at least a smattering of Christmas baking? Russian teacakes, snicker doodles, sugar cookies, cyclops, gingerbread cookies and all manner of squares.

When the kids were little we would go about a baking frenzy making above and more. We would then proceed to assemble plates for a number of families that we were close to, make a card, wrap it up and spend a day delivering these home made delights. Unannounced we would deliver our goodies, at times leaving them for the family to discover upon their return home, and at times to be invited in and share in a visit as kids nibbled away in the Christmas sweets.

Yes, the baking is scaled down greatly these past few years but one can always anticipate some extra activity in the kitchen without which The Holiday would not seem complete. With kids now undertaking it on their own, I simply get a warm glow as I watch, and yes, help clean.

The Magic Of Children

When the kids were younger it was all about making Christmas a magical experience for them. We relished in their anticipation of waking up to Santa's bells and ho ho ho  bright and early Christmas morn. They would always plan on following Santa after his visit and we would always find a way to distract them from implementing said plan. (How was it that Daddy always slept through and subsequently missed Sanata's visit?)  Santa aka Dad has a hard time letting go of this Christmas morning tradition, even with the kids at the ripe ages of 20, 18 and 17 and the jury is out as to what to anticipate this Christmas morn.

And so it is with two home from college for the Holidays that my children are bringing the magic of Christmas to me. I am the one with bated breath relishing the time with my family all together, home for the Holiday.

Mark's Corner

Mark with the Girls Welcome to the 2nd installment of "Mark's Corner", with the hopes that sharing a slice of life from rural Maine will put a smile on your face.

With the Holidays right upon us I would venture to guess that most of you are rushing about and stressing big time. Same here. With our two university students recently returned home, and the clock ticking before the "big day", I would have to admit that my stress level is definitely up.

So, I thought I'd share with you the joy I get from our latest litter of puppies, which are now 5 weeks old. Our golden retriever Star gave us a beautiful litter of 6 (4 girls and 2 boys), which are rapidly growing. Aside from helping her as she needs in the birthing process and managing care daily, I take it upon myself to "socialize" the pups. Well, that's what I use as an excuse to, every night after dinner, take each pup, one at a time, out of the whelping box, wrap them in a towel and snuggle with them during TV time. Yes, I say this is to socialize them but really the joy is mine. Really, how can you not smile with a puppy licking your face and tail in full wag mode before settling down to a nap in your arms? Although I can't let you all hold one, I am hoping that the above image can do for you what it does for me, put me in the mindset to remember that we are suppose to enjoy the holidays, to enjoy our families (even those relatives that are not so much "fun"), and to simply embrace the Spirit of Christmas. Yes, PUPPIES help.

I welcome you to enjoy our pups by way of visiting our website at www.peacockhillfarm.com where we post photos of the pups as they grow.

Celebrate Each Day

In the course of each Holiday there will be times when you need to draw on those "well remembered moments" to remind yourself of what it is that makes the Holiday time special and meaningful. We thank you for this opportunity to share with you some of ours, and would welcome hearing of your own and together we can wish each other simple joys and quiet wonders.

From our house to yours, a joyous Holiday Season and a wish that you can indeed find the time to enjoy all the quiet wonders this Season brings.  If you know of some one who you think would like to read this email smiply click the Forward to a Friend box below.
