AZCOPS opposes SB 1028
On May 20, AZCOPS Vice President John Stair, Director of Government Relations Luis Ebratt and AZCPOA President Michael Duran went to the State Capitol to oppose Senate Bill 1028.
Section 34 of this bill seeks to privatize the Department of Corrections facilities of Yuma, Eyman and Perryville. Ebratt and Duran spoke in opposition to this legislation.
Although the bill passed by a narrow margin of 5-4 , there was significant discussion as to the merits of such a move. AZCOPS friend and Appropriations Committee Chairman Russell Pearce (R-D18) acknowledged the bill still needed work. Vice Chairman Al Melvin (R-D26), voiced opposition to the bill but was willing to vote it out of committee on condition it would be scrutinized further.
AZCOPS will continue to watch this legislation and will work to defeat this measure. AZCOPS would like to acknowledge VP John Stair for his day-long vigil that insured the interest of AZCPOA/AZCOPS would be represented at the Capitol. |
