NativeUniverseNative Universe Grant & Intensive Workshop

As pa
NSF logort of a $1,931,043 collaborative National Science Foundation four-year grant that 'Imiloa, along with the Indigenous Education Institute and the University of California at Berkeley received, 'Imiloa will kick off the Native Universe: Indigenous Voice in Science Museums project by hosting a week-long intensive workshop on the Big Island beginning February 27th and running through March 4th. Program participants are the Indigenous Education Institute, the Center for Science Education at UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory, the Institute for Learning Innovation, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, the Alaska-Fairbanks Museum of Natural History, and the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i. This cohort of museum professionals, educators, administrators, and evaluators will be visiting Maunakea, Kona, Kalahuipua'a, Waipi'o Valley, Nawahiokalani'opu'u Immersion School, sailing aboard the Hokualaka'i, and visiting 'Imiloa.

Native Universe will help science museums build their capacity to educate the public on issues of environmental change as well as the human relationship to nature from Indigenous peoples' perspectives. The project builds on the successful NSF-funded Cosmic Serpent professional development project, which explores commonalities between native and western science, enabling participants to use science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) as an entry point for museum programs and exhibits.

HitchhikersGuideA 3D Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe

The Messier Objects Located in the Milky Way

'Imiloa Astronomy Center brings back its popular Thursday evening program A 3D Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe, this time focusing on the Messier Objects located in the Milky Way for a five-week run starting March 1, 2012. The program will be offered weekly, on Thursday evenings at 7pm through March 29th.

Orion Nebula
The live planetarium program, hosted by Shawn Laatsch, 'Imiloa planetarium manager, uses the 3D stereoscopic projection capability in the 'Imiloa planetarium to "fly" participants out into space on a unique and engaging tour of the universe that astronomers are discovering with the observatories of Maunakea and other space based missions.

Laatsch will begin the voyage by exploring our night sky and pointing out some of the brighter stars and constellations. From there he will take audiences out and explore the objects the French Astronomer Charles Messier catalogued in the late 1700's. These are some of the brightest objects visible with binoculars and backyard telescopes. Laatsch will show the latest views of a number of these objects and their positions in the Milky Way. Audiences will explore the Milky Way as our home galaxy, and how the Messier Objects have helped us gain valuable insight into the structure and workings of our home galaxy. Take a virtual 3D flight through the cosmos in a new and exciting way. Feel as if you are "jumping off the Earth" as you voyage through time and space. This program promises to entertain and educate the audience with imagery that can be seen only in Hilo, at the 'Imiloa Astronomy planetarium.

Admission is $8 for Kupuna, Individual, Dual, and Family members; $6 for Patron Members; Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members. Non-member rate is $10.

Capturing Laser Astronomy in Beautiful Images

Image: Laser and Star Trails over Gemini North
Click image for more details & a better view.
In this month's Maunakea Skies presentation learn how Gemini Observatory's Joy Pollard has captured the beauty of the Gemini Observatory's laser guide star technology in stunning photos and in time-lapse movies of the night sky over Maunakea. This same technology is allowing astronomers to see the universe in unprecedented detail and obtain remarkably striking images of the cosmos. Joy Pollard

Learn about the techniques Pollard uses to create striking time-lapse movies of the night sky and experience the full-dome immersion of her images taken with state-of-the-art digital cameras with super wide-angle fish-eye lenses. Her images
will put you on the mountain without the discomfort of freezing temperatures and thin air that she suffers with to obtain them.

Gemini's Public Information and Outreach Manager (and frequent guest host of Maunakea Skies) Peter Michaud will add details about the unique technology of laser guide stars and how they are used to obtain images of the sky that are more detailed than even possible with the Hubble Space Telescope. It's a technology that is revolutionizing astronomy from the ground and making Maunakea even more important to humanity's understanding of the universe.

March 17th's
Maunakea Skies will be hosted by Dr. Richard Crowe, Professor of Physics & Astronomy at UH Hilo. After the guest speaker's featured presentation, Dr. Crowe will provide observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawai'i, pointing out prominent constellations and stars one can see during this time of year. As a special bonus, audience members will be given a print of one of Pollard's most striking images!

The monthly Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cost is $5 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $3 for Patron Members, Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members. Non-member rate is $8. Pre-purchase tickets at the 'Imiloa front desk or by phone at 969-9703.

AdoptAFieldTripAdopt a Visit Field Trip Program

There were stars all over us. I got to see real meteors. I learned that 'Imiloa means "to explore." Why does the sun shine? When will the sun run out of fuel? What are the stars?

These are just a few of the things we've heard from children who have come to 'Imiloa on field trips made possible bySchool Bus Drawing people like you. With rising fuel costs and the challenges faced by today's teachers, we all know how difficult it can be for teachers and administrators to take students on field trips. That's why 'Imiloa continues to make it a priority to raise private funding support for the Adopt a Visit field trip program.

Please consider a gift today to help our local children reach for the stars. Innovation starts with education. Inspire our children, our community and the future by making a gift to 'Imiloa's Education fund in support of the Adopt a Visit field trip program today.

A VISTA of the Helix Nebula

Helix Nebula image

Spanning 2.5 light years, and situated at a distance of 700 light years from Earth toward the constellation of Aquarius, the Helix Nebula is one of the brightest and closest examples of a "planetary" nebula, the ejected outer gaseous envelope of a dying low-mass star. The stellar remnant left behind at the center of the nebula is a white dwarf, a star with the mass of the Sun and the size of the Earth, radiating enough ultraviolet light to cause the ejected gas to glow. The image shown here was taken in 3-color infrared light by the European Southern Observatory's 4.1-meter Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) in Chile. At the inner edge of this nebula are unusual paint-drip-shaped gas knots of unknown origin.
