TransitOfVenusEvents'Imiloa Transit of Venus 2012

Transit of Venus 2012The planet Venus will pass directly between Earth and the Sun on Tuesday June 5, 2012. A silhouette of the transit of Venus across the Sun will be visible from Hawai'i between 12:09 pm and 6:46 pm. This rare alignment won't happen again until the year 2117.
Transits occurring in past centuries played a key role in calculating the size and scale of our solar system. An expedition to observe an 18th century transit lead to Captain James Cook's landfall in Hawai'i. King David Kalakaua hosted the British during a 19th century transit. Modern day astronomers observe transits across distant stars to detect planets beyond our solar system.

Leading up to this astronomical event of a lifetime, 'Imiloa will be hosting a series of hands-on activities, lectures, special planetarium shows and exhibits showcasing Hawai'i's legacy of innovation and exploration. On Saturday, June 2, the Center will host talks and educational activities. On Tuesday, June 5, Transit Day, 'Imiloa will have special planetarium programming, transit viewing, hands-on activities, and viewing of the NASA webcast of the transit from the UH Institute for Astronomy (IfA).

Historical Transit of Venus Honolulu imagePlease visit our Transit of Venus webpage for more information and a schedule of events.

Please note: never look at the Sun with unprotected eyes. Permanent damage and even blindness will result. Special eye protection (solar filters) is required to safely view the transit and will be available at 'Imiloa.

This is a fantastic full-dome show that looks into the rare and magnificent celestial apparition called a Venus transit. The show covers what a transit is, a famous transit viewing from the 18th century led by Captain Cook, and exciting information about the sun and Venus.

CoinAstroDay2012 Mauna Kea Collectors Coin Available at AstroDay2012 Mauna Kea Coin Contest Winner photo

AstroDay, Saturday May 5, 2012

The Mauna Kea Coin Contest was open to K-12 students on Hawai'i Island from January 28 to March 9, 2012. This contest was initiated in 2011 by Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee (MKAOC) as its outreach effort for the people in the community. 'Imiloa co-sponsors the contest with KTA Super Stores, Onizuka Space Center, and Galaxy Garden/Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary.

There were 1,006 entries in total from Hawai'i island, 300 more entries from the previous year. Among nine (9) category winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in grades K-4, 5-8, 9-12 categories), Serena Usuda, seventh grader at Waiakea Intermediate School, won the grand prize. The winning design connects Hawaiian culture and nature, with modern telescopes in her petroglyph-style artwork.

The 2012 coin will be distributed at AstroDay in the Prince Kuhio Plaza shopping mall in Hilo, Saturday, May 5 from 10am to 4pm. Those who fill their AstroDay coin passport with stamps from all the observatory stations, including 'Imiloa's booth, will receive a free aluminum coin. The passports can be picked up at the Mauna Kea Coin Contest booth close to the center stage. The antique bronze finish coin will be available for sale at the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station and its e-store. All the winning designs will be displayed at the coin contest booth at AstroDay, May 5th, and on the Mauna Kea Coin Contest 2012 official site.

Imaging Planets Around Other Stars From the Summit of Maunakea

Are there planets like Earth around other stars? Humans have been asking this
fundamental question for thousands of years. Today we are the first generation to finally begin to answer it using the Exoplanet image tools of science.

In 1995 the first planet orbiting another star like our Sun was discovered. Since then, nearly 800 exoplanets (short for extrasolar planets) have been found, creating one of the most exciting and fastest growing areas of research in astronomy. Most of these planets have been found through indirect methods, and only in the past few years have astronomers been able to take images of these solar systems around other stars.

In this month's Maunakea Skies presentation Brendan Bowler will review the incredible and unexpected diversity of planetary systems that have been discovered so far. He will describe ongoing efforts to image exoplanets, which teaches us about the structure and composition of their atmospheres, using the largest telescopes perched on the summit of Maunakea. Brendan will also share his perspective on the future of the field, including where the next generation of 30-meter class telescopes will take us.

Brendan BowlerBrendan Bowler is a PhD candidate at UH Manoa's Institute for Astronomy (IfA). He studies the formation of giant planets and the properties of their atmospheres in the infrared using the Keck, Subaru, and Gemini-North telescopes. Prior to Hawai'i, he dual majored in physics and astrophysics at Tufts University in Boston, graduating with a B.A. in 2007. When not doing research Brendan enjoys hiking and surfing on O'ahu.

May 19th's
Maunakea Skies will be hosted by Peter Michaud, Gemini Observatory's Public Information and Outreach Manager. After the guest speaker's featured presentation, Peter will provide observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawai'i, pointing out prominent constellations and stars one can see during this time of year.

The monthly Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cost is $5 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $3 for Patron Members, Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members. Non-member rate is $8. Pre-purchase tickets at the 'Imiloa front desk or by phone at 969-9703.

SpringIntersessionSpring into the Universe Success

Spring Intersession 2012 photoIn March 'Imiloa's Education Team and volunteers hosted 53 kindergarten to third grade students during Spring Break for a week-long adventure of science and cultural inspiration and engagement. Activities included the "Science of Self," focusing on the importance of having a strong mind, body, and spirit to provision each student's exploration of the universe. Through hands-on and empowering activities, each student learned about and practiced kuleana and malama 'aina; the stewardship of planet Earth. Each student also discovered knowledge, provisions and technology that is required to explore other worlds beyond our own. 'Imiloa's Spring Into the Universe Program was an amazing experience for students and for 'Imiloa staff.

NanoDaysNanoDays

'Imiloa's Education Team hosted NanoDays in partnership with the Nanoscale Informal Science Education (NISE) Network. 'Imiloa invited school groups, members and visitors to explore the teeny tiny world of nanoscale science and technology through fun hands-on activities with 'Imiloa staff and volunteers. The NanoDays highlights on March 30th included making a DNA necklace, how nano technology is used to treat cancer, as well as how nano filters have the potential to make clean water accessible and affordable on a global scale.

On March 31st, 'Imiloa's Keiki Corner was filled with nano world activities such as "Nano Senses" for children and their families. 'Imiloa staff and volunteers donned their "HortonNanoDays photo Hears a Who" ears and facilitated nano activities that focused on each of the five senses. Keiki and their parents were even treated to readings from Dr. Suess' Horton Hears A Who. Inspiring keiki of all ages is 'Imiloa's foundation because as Horton says, "A person's a person no matter how small."

Blue Hollows on Planet Mercury
Blue Hollows on Planet Mercury
Credit: NASA / JHU APL / CIW
Click image for a closer view.
These strange bluish-colored "hollows" on Mercury, which appear to be rounded depressions, were recently discovered by the MESSENGER spacecraft, the first ever to orbit the Solar System's innermost planet. These depressions are not impact craters and there is nothing like them anywhere else in the Solar System. The image is a segment 25 miles across of the floor of the Raditladi impact basin, and it includes the mountains of the central peak. The hollows may be formed from sublimation of exposed material that was heated by the impact that created the basin. NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft is scheduled to continue orbiting Mercury into the year 2013.
