Maunakea Skies, February 18th at 7pm
A Nursery for Young Massive Proto-Stars | Rosette Nebula. Credit: Caltech. Click for closer view.
|
The Caltech Submillimeter Observatory has been studying the formation of stars by looking at proto-stars in the Cygnus X region, one of the richest known regions of star formation in the galaxy. Observations showed the rotational rate of these proto-stars and magnetic field penetrating the area play a key role in star formation. During the February Maunakea Skies presentation, Dr. Hiroko Shinnaga will highlight the findings of this study and discuss how the long wavelength of submillimeter help us understand how young massive stars are born. | |
Dr. Hiroko Shinnaga
| Dr. Hiroko Shinnaga is a staff research scientist at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO), where she has worked since 2004. Immediately prior to that she worked at the Smithsonian-ASIAA Submillimeter Array (SMA) for three years. She received her PhD at Ibaraki University in Japan and moved to Hilo in 2001. She studies how stars are born and how stars end their lives mainly at submillimeter wave. February 18th's Maunakea Skies will be hosted by Peter Michaud of Gemini Observatory. After the guest speaker's featured presentation, Peter will provide observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawai'i, pointing out prominent constellations and stars one can see during this time of year.
The monthly Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cost is $5 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $3 for Patron Members, Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members. Non-member rate is $8. Pre-purchase tickets at the 'Imiloa front desk or by phone at 969-9703. Back to top |

Rocky Planet Collisions in the Makali'i
 | Credit: Gemini Observatory/I. Song (Caltech)/J. Rhee & B. Zuckerman (UCLA)
Click image for a closer view. |
This color composite RGB (Red, Green, Blue) image of the Pleiades (Makali'i) star cluster and surrounding region was created by Inseok Song, staff scientist at Caltech's Spitzer Science Center and a former astronomer with the Gemini Observatory. Although referred to as the seven sisters, the Makali'i cluster actually contains some 1,400 stars, and is one of the closest star clusters to Earth at a distance of 400 light years. In 2007, a team of UCLA astronomers measured heat from hot dust surrounding the 100-million-year-old star HD 23514 in the Pleiades. They interpreted the presence of so much hot dust as a result of colliding planetary embryos. This led them to the conclusion that a recent collision occurred between relatively large rocky bodies, similar to the encounter that produced the Earth-Moon system about 4.5 billion years ago.
