Sponsorship Opportunities: 2012 Merrie Monarch Cultural Enrichment Programs at 'Imiloa
'Imiloa has sponsorship opportunities available for businesses looking to reach a strong kama'aina and visitor audience. Sponsorship opportunities begin at the $1,000 level, with benefits accruing as the level of sponsorship increases. Every year, 'Imiloa hosts eight culturally significant events during the week of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival. Utilizing cultural experts, the series of educational presentations, workshops and performances enhance the audience's understanding of Hawaiian music, hula schools, and chants to gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the art of hula as shared through Hilo's annual Merrie Monarch hula competition.

In 5 years of hosting these workshops, 'Imiloa has hosted an impressive lineup of musicians and kumu hula including Mark Yamanaka, Johnny Lum Ho, Kainani Kahaunaele, Na Palapalai, Nani Lim Yap, Hokulani Holt, Lono Padilla, Robert Ka'upu, and Ulalia Woodside, just to name a few. For more information on the Merrie Monarch Cultural Enrichment programs, please click here.

2012 Merrie Monarch Cultural Enrichment Programming at 'Imiloa will be held Tuesday, April 10 through Friday, April 13 2012. 'Imiloa Receives $1.1M Grant for Mobile Science Lab
'Imiloa is proud to announce that the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation has awarded a $1.1M grant to support our efforts to reach more students and families in rural and underserved communities via a mobile learning lab. The dynamic learning environment will stimulate science education across Hawai'i Island. The three-year grant will be used to design and construct the mobile science learning platform, develop curriculum, training and staffing, and evaluation. Plans include a portable, inflatable planetarium, a Hawaiian Star Compass, and 'Imiloa loaner trunk kits designed to engage families in hands-on science activities. This state-of-the-art mobile platform will focus on engaging and inspiring our next generation of leaders and innovators in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

First Annual Hawai'i Island Regional Science Olympiad at 'Imiloa
On January 14th and 15th 'Imiloa will host the First Annual Hawai'i Island Regional Science Olympiad. Thanks to the generous support of our co-sponsor, Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV), nearly 20 student-teacher teams from schools across Hawai'i Island have registered to compete in a series of science-focused events. Featured events will include Mousetrap Car, Rocks/Minerals, Reach for the Stars, Astronomy, Tower Building, Write It/Do It, and Optics.
Dedicated to improving the quality of science education for students in Hawai'i, the Science Olympiad supports teams, standards, and project-based activities that focus on real-world STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) application. The Science Olympiad provides an alternative to the "isolated scientist" stereotype and reminds students that science can be fun, exciting, and challenging all at the same time. For more information on the Science Olympiad at 'Imiloa, please contact Craig Mitchell from 'Imiloa's Education department at 969-9720 or cmitchell@imiloahawaii.org. For more information on Science Olympiad in general visit www.hsso.org.

Maunakea Skies, January 21st at 7pm
Metals in the Universe | |
Click image for a closer view.
|
Astronomers define metals as being all elements other than Hydrogen and Helium. Metals are found everywhere in the Universe and are an essential component for life. Techniques using professional telescopes can be used to determine the amount of metals in the Sun and in Meteorites. The amount of metals throughout the Milky Way can also be determined using stars, planetary nebulae or other objects. In the far reaches of the Universe, abundance determination becomes more difficult but can be done using other Galaxies. In this presentation, Dr. Daniel Devost will discuss how the measured evolution of the amount of metals can be used as a test for cosmological models and help us get a better understanding of our Universe. Dr. Daniel Devost is the director of Science Operations at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) since 2008 and resident astronomer since 2007. He came to CFHT from Cornell where he worked on the Infrared Spectrograph, one of the instruments on the Spitzer space telescope. Dr. Devost earned his PhD in 2004 from the Université Laval in Québec City, Canada. January 21st's Maunakea Skies will be hosted by Shawn Laatsch, 'Imiloa's Planetarium Manager. After the guest speaker's featured presentation, Shawn will provide observational highlights of the current night sky over Hawai'i, pointing out prominent constellations and stars one can see during this time of year.
The monthly Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cost is $5 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $3 for Patron Members, Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members. Non-member rate is $8. Pre-purchase tickets at the 'Imiloa front desk or by phone at 969-9703. Back to top |

Na Pua No'eau and 'Imiloa Team Up for Super Enrichment Saturday
'Imiloa hit the road this December and traveled to Kaua'i for a Super Enrichment Saturday collaboration with Na Pua No'eau, the Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children. Na Pua No'eau is a close partner of 'Imiloa's and we are proud to have their support as a member of our Education Partner membership category. When the opportunity presented itself to provide enrichment activities centered around traditional wayfinding and navigation skills to families on Kaua'i, 'Imiloa's Planetarium Operator 'Ahia Dye and Programs Assistant Celeste Ha'o jumped into action.
Held on the Kaua'i Community College Campus, over 30 keiki and their parents, gathered into the small Hawaiian Studies Classroom for the event themed "Kilolani." Participants learned a variety of wayfinding skills and techniques which celebrated the ingeniousness of Hawai'i's ancient navigators.
The night's events began with, "Hanai a Ka Malama," Cared For By the Moon, in which our planetarium operator, 'Ahia Dye, shared mo'olelo from the island of Kaua'i about how the moon guided some of their chiefs of old. Through chants and interactive activities, she shared the Hawaiian moon phases and role they played in timekeeping, farming and fishing.
'Imiloa Programs Assistant, Celeste Ha'o, shared Hawaiian Starlines and the Hawaiian Star Compass. She taught about how navigators and wayfinders use it to orientate themselves while voyaging out on the open ocean.
Celeste then closed the evening's activities with a heartfelt, personal and reflective exercise called "Inner Compass" which called upon keiki and 'ohana to reflect on their own personal inner compasses. Through storytelling, she shared the things and the people that frame her personal "Inner Compass" and help guide her through her own life's journey. It was a fun-filled night full of learning and empowerment for the entire 'ohana.

A Stellar Butterfly
|
Credit: NASA, ESA, Hubble SM4 ERO Team Click image for a closer view.
|
This must be the largest butterfly in the Galaxy, a close-up view by the Hubble Space Telescope of a dying star that is gradually ejecting its outer layers over thousands of years. The central star of NGC 6302, popularly called the "Butterfly" Nebula, is over 200,000 degrees Celsius. However, it is hidden from direct view by a dense doughnut of dust and molecular hydrogen that is edgewise to our line of sight. NGC 6302 is about 4,000 light years away in the direction of the constellation Scorpius.
