Camp 'Imiloa Update
Camp 'Imiloa has been a great success! There have already been four fun-filled weeks of various camps. Kids are learning while having fun and parents are thrilled, as you can tell by the feedback below.
For the past three summers my child leaves Camp 'Imiloa daily with experiences to share. Engaging a child in learning is a feat. Mahalo nui to Camp 'Imiloa for doing an outstanding job!
My son really enjoyed the boys camp. I liked the hands on learning experince that he got. In school he doesn't always get this type of hands on that 'Imiloa provides. I also thought it was great that you got a grant to help fund the program. It made it a lot more affordable. Overall a great experience.
My son thorougly enjoyed the program and spoke of electricity when he got home. He was very excited about what he learned. Thank you!
Space is limited but there are some openings for the final camp:
Each session of Camp 'Imiloa is $150 for members and $175 for nonmembers. Enroll today by calling the front desk (808) 969-9703.
'Imiloa provides accommodations for accessibility for persons with disabilities. For accommodations contact Craig Mitchell, at 969-9720 or email cmitchell@imiloahawaii.org ten business days prior to event.

Geothermal Experts Share Sustainable Science
2011 `Imiloa Camp for Boys Building a geothermal energy plant
A special mahalo to Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) and Ormat for their support of the summer camp programs on sustainability. General Manager Mike Kaleikini and Administrative Supervisor Tito Agbayani visited 'Imiloa and engaged camp participants in the wonders of the world of geothermal science. After hearing them speak and asking many thoughtful questions, students made a model of a geothermal plant using a hydrodynamics engineering kit, which broadened their understanding of sustainable technology. Mahalo nui Puna Geothermal Venture and Ormat for helping 'Imiloa share with local youth how fun science can be!

Maunakea Skies July 16 at 7pm
The Thirty Meter Telescope - Astronomy's Next Generation Observatory
Astronomy's next generation observatory, the Thirty Meter Telescope(TMT) will be the topic at the next Maunakea Skies on Saturday, July 16, at 7:00pm in the planetarium. Join Gordon Squires as he discusses the potential of the TMT.
A little over 400 years ago, Galileo Galilei pointed, what was at the time, the world's largest telescope towards the skies, and changed our view of the world forever. Now in planning for "first light" on Maunakea later this decade, the Thirty Meter Telescope is truly astronomy's "next generation" observatory. With angular resolution better than any optical/near-infrared telescope on the ground or in space, TMT will revolutionize our understanding of the universe. In his presentation, the audience will explore the science that TMT will uniquely reveal, from the formation of the very first stars and galaxies over 13 billion years ago, to the nature of objects in our own outer solar system.
Gordon K. Squires
Gordon K. Squires is an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology, working with the Thirty Meter Telescope, as well as NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, the Herschel Space Observatory, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and other space telescopes with Caltech involvement. His research explores the old, cold and distant universe - understanding how galaxies formed billions of years ago and the nature of the dark matter and dark energy that fills space.
July 16th's Maunakea Skies will be hosted by Dr. Richard Crowe, Professor of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Hawai'i Hilo. He will provide observational highlights of the summer night-time skies over Hawai'i, pointing out prominent constellations and stars one can see during this time of year.
The monthly Maunakea Skies planetarium presentations are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cost is $5 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $3 for Patron Members, Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members. Non-member rate is $8. Pre-purchase tickets at the 'Imiloa front desk or by phone at 969-9704.

Iulai (July) Skies 2011
Highlights from the Night Sky - July 2011
- Mercury is best viewed the first week of July right after sunset in the western sky. Look for it low on the horizon.
- Venus rises just before the Sun and is low morning sky.
- Mars is visible in the morning sky in the east rising around 3 am. Look for it on the 27th when it appears close to the Moon.
- Jupiter is visible in our morning skies this month rising around 1:30am. Look for the Galilean moons with binoculars.
- Saturn will be high in the south after sunset. It will set just before midnight this month in the constellation of Virgo.
- Earth is at Aphelion on July 4th. This is our FARTHEST point from the Sun in our elliptical orbit. Many people mistakenly think that we are close to the Sun in Summer and far away in Winter, when really the opposite is true. Our distance has NO effect on our seasons. Instead it is the tilt of the Earth which causes these changes.
- The Delta Aquarid meteor shower peaks on July 28th it is a minor shower with about 15-20 meteors visible per hour in the early morning.
Iulai Celestial Calendar Date Event Friday, July 1 Muku (New Moon) at 1:23 am HST Saturday, July 2 Ukaliali'i (Mercury) 5° north of the Moon Monday, July 4 Earth at Aphelion Thursday, July 7 Olekukahi (First Quarter Moon) at 8:29 pm HST Thursday, July 14 Hoku (Full Moon) at 8:40 pm HST Wednesday, July 20 Ukaliali'i (Mercury) at greatest eastern elongation Friday, July 22 Kaloakukahi (Last Quarter Moon) at 7:06 pm HST Saturday, July 23 Ka'awela (Jupiter) 5° south of the Moon Wednesday, July 27 Hoku'ulapina'au (Mars) 0.5°north of the Moon Thursday, July 28 Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower Peak Saturday, July 30 Muku (New Moon) at 8:40 am HST Back to top

Image of the Month
The Milky Way According to Spitzer
Credit: GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL, NASA, JPL-Caltech, Univ. Wisconsin
The Spitzer Space Telescope's infrared view of the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy is hard to appreciate in just one photo. More than 800,000 frames of data from Spitzer's cameras were sewn together to produce this most detailed infrared picture of our galaxy ever made. The small portion in false color seen here is only 8 degrees across, roughly the width of your fist held at arms length (the full mosaic is 120 degrees wide!) The curving green filaments of light are from complex molecules - polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) - the black, sooty products of incomplete combustion such as might be found in barbecue pits. PAHs are found in star forming regions, along with reddish emission from graphite-rich dust particles. Blue specks are individual stars. Back to top
