The Brain on Jazz bass

Did you know that scientists have discovered that when jazz musicians improvise, their brains turn off areas linked to self-censoring and inhibition, and turn on those that let self-expression flow?  There's evidence of neurological underpinnings of the almost trance-like state jazz artists enter during spontaneous improvisation.

How do you watch a brain on jazz?  Inside an MRI scanner that measures changes in oxygen use by different regions of the brain as they perform different tasks.  Explore your brain on jazz, find out why certain parts of musician's brains light up when they play unscripted music.

Special guest wine experts will be on hand to share the science of wine with you.  Learn how chemistry affects taste, why some foods are better paired with certain types of wines than others.  How do things like fermentation technology, acidity, tannins, or origins of grape vines relate to taste, alcohols, acids and minerals?

Enjoy a vareity of wines paired with a special pupu menu from 'Imiloa's Sky Garden Restaurant and learn the chemistry behind our senses of taste from spicy to sweet.

What do jazz music, the science of wine and 'Imiloa have in common anyway?

The word "science" comes from the Latin word "scientia," meaning knowledge.  And the word '"Imiloa" means "to explore new knowledge." As an informal science education center, part of our mission is to share science in an engaging way that celebrates the facts that:

Science is everywhere.....
Science is fun.....
Science is relatable....

And guess what?  So is our Hawaiian culture!

So come check us out at 'Imiloa After Dark: Jazz on the Vine and learn something new about wine and jazz, how our senses are affected,  what Jazz music does to our minds, and other cool things designed to engage you in the wonders of science and the world around us.
