In Memoriam: Dr. Walter Steiger

Dr. Walt Steiger
Dr. Walter Steiger

Dr. Walter Steiger was a Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.  During his 30-year career at Manoa, he began an astronomy program and developed a solar observatory at Makapu'u Point on O'ahu, which later was supplanted by one on Haleakala, Maui. On Haleakala, he conducted studies of the airglow and zodiacal light.  After an early retirement in
1980, he entered a new form of teaching from the Bishop Museum Planetarium.  During this period he also served for four years on the UH Board of Regents.  In 1987, looking for another new challenge, he was offered the opportunity to work on Maunakea as Site Manager for the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory.  After retirement from CSO, he was back to his first love, teaching physics, this time at UH Hilo, as Adjunct Professor.

Dr. Steiger also served as Interim Director of Maunakea Astronomy Education Center, what would later become known as 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i, from 2003-2004, where he helped develop the philosophy and structure of the exhibits and the planetarium.  Until his passing on Sunday, February 6, 2011, Dr. Steiger continued to
talk and write about the origins of astronomy in Hawai'i.

Read Hawai'i Tribune-Herald "Colleagues Recall Star of Hawai'i Astronomy" article.

On behalf of Dr. Steiger's family, a memorial service will take place on Saturday the 12th of February 2011 at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center from 5pm.

Dr. Steiger's family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, people donate to the Dr. Walter and Betty Steiger Scholarship Fund at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo or to the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i.

Science Synergies: A Tale of Two Telescopes

Gemini Dome
Gemini Observatory
The observatories on Mauna Kea come in many sizes and have many different astronomical purposes. Increasingly, observations made with the smaller telescopes are being used to identify objects of extreme astrophysical interest which must be studied in detail with the larger observatories. Having just moved from one telescope (UKIRT) to another (Gemini), Dr. Adamson has seen both ends of one of the most productive such partnerships. In this talk, he will show some of the best examples of the scientific productivity which happens when two telescopes work together on different aspects of the same problem.  This will take us to the nearest, most extreme brown dwarfs, and to the most distant quasar known in the Universe.

UKIRT
United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT)
Hosted by Shawn Laatsch, 'Imiloa's Planetarium Manager, Maunakea Skies is held every third Saturday in the Planetarium.  Cost is $5 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $3 for Patron Members, Free for Silver, Gold and
 Dr. Adamson
Dr. Adamson
Corporate Members, and $8 for non-members.

Dr. Andy Adamson is currently the Director of Science and Operations for Gemini Observatory, prior to this he served as the associate director UKIRT from 1998 to 2010. Born in the United Kingdom, Dr. Adamson was a lecturer and computer systems manager at the University of Central Lancashire in the northwest of the United Kingdom for ten years, before arriving on the Big Island in 1998. His research focuses on interstellar dust particles - the microscopic motes of silicate and (hydro) carbons which pervade the space between the stars and obscure much of the local Universe from our sight.

Kona Galaxy Garden

Kona Galaxy Garden
Credit & Copyright: Jon Lomberg Photography by Pierre and Heidy Lesage
How does a galaxy grow? In this case, with water and sunlight. This is an aerial photo of the Paleaku Peace Gardens Sanctuary in Kona. The garden, about 100 feet across, is a floral map of the Milky Way Galaxy. Stars, globular clusters, and nebulae are represented by a variety of plants, and rows of plants trace out the spiral arms. The Sun and many bright stars are marked on leaves. There is even a bar of plants through the center (as has been recently discovered in the case of our Milky Way), and at the Galaxy Garden center is a fountain, representing the central black hole known as Sagittarius A*!

Highlights from the Night Sky - February 2011
  • Mercury and Mars are in conjunction this month and are not visible.

  • Venus rises 3 hours before the Sun and is brilliant in the morning sky. Try using binoculars to see its phase.

  • Jupiter is in the southwest at sunset and is an early evening object. If possible explore with binoculars to see the Galilean Moons.

  • Saturn rises around 11pm  and is visible to sunrise.  Small telescopes easily reveal its wonderful rings.
