Happy New Year and Happy Birthday 'Imiloa!
Aloha e Members and Friends,
As 'Imiloa celebrates our first five years of operation, I am reminded of the tremendous community support it took to get 'Imiloa to where it is today. Thank you for investing in the future of our island and our State by supporting 'Imiloa through your membership and philanthropic support. We could not have made it this far without your support of our mission and work to engage and inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
It's easy to focus on what's to come and forget about where we've been and, as I've reflected over our critical formative years, I'm also deeply appreciative of the input and feedback our members and friends have given us along the way. Your support and investment have helped strengthen the reach and impact of our programs and have helped realize the vision our founders imagined in 2005 of creating a strong future for our island and our State by engaging and stimulating the bright, young minds of Hawai'i's keiki.
How have we done this? By engaging the community in relevant and timely educational programming; by sharing the idea with youth and their 'ohana that science is fun, science is everywhere; and science doesn't have to be intimidating. Our work helps bridge this gap - connecting culture and science and sharing how our ancestors used science to connect and relate to the world around them, whether farming the land or navigating the Pacific with the stars as their guide.
On Hawai'i Island, 'Imiloa has become a place of gathering, inspiration and connection. Nationally and internationally, 'Imiloa has become a model of successful cultural and scientific integration for other institutions looking to create a similar resource in their hometowns. Five years after opening our doors, this mission is now being carried beyond our island home and touching lives of children in other cultures.
The letters and testimonials we receive from students and parents about the difference 'Imiloa is making in their lives tell the story best. Read a few of them here.
Thank you for helping to ignite this mission. I hope that you will choose to continue your support in 2011 so together we can engage and inspire Hawai'i's next and future generation of explorers and innovators. Please renewing your membership support or give to our educational scholarship fund so that more children can experience these valuable educational programs.
I look forward to working with you and hope you will join us in celebration of 'Imiloa's five year anniversary February 13, 2011 for KTA Family Free Day, featuring Journey Through the Universe.

Robotics Devices for Multiple Function in Subaru Telescope
When people take photographs we change lenses such as a zoom lens, micro lens, and prime lens due to different purposes to get the best possible images. The Subaru Telescope has the same function: there are various cameras (instruments) and we exchange them due to different functions and purposes to get the best astronomical images and information. Subaru telescope is located atop of Maunakea (~13,800 feet) where air is thin and our brains do not work well due to less oxygen. Exchanging heavy instruments and optics can be difficult and dangerous in this environment. This presentation will discuss how instruments are changed efficiently and safely using the two robotics devices installed at the Subaru Telescope.
Hosted by Shawn Laatsch, 'Imiloa's Planetarium Manager, Maunakea Skies is held every third Saturday in the Planetarium. Cost is $5 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $3 for Patron Members, Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members, and $8 for non-members.
Dr. Tomonori Usuda was born in Nagano, Japan. When he was a little boy, he was fascinated Japanese Robot cartoons such as Con Battler V and Maginger Z. Dr. Usuda received a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Tokyo in 1997. He moved to Big Island in February 1998, when the winter Olympic was held at Nagano. He was appointed the chief of the telescope engineering division from 2002 and made associate director of Subaru in 2006. His major of research is infrared astronomy to study formation of stars and planets. Dr. Usuda has also designed and built a number of infrared instruments for the study of massive star formation.

'Imiloa on the Road!
In November, 'Imiloa staff kept busy sharing 'Imiloa's mission with peer science and culture centers in California, British Columbia and Tahiti.
'Imiloa's Navigator-in-Residence Kalepa Baybayan, Executive Director Ka'iu Kimura, Marketing Manager Jeff Harman, Planetarium Operator Christopher Phillips and Kona artist Gary Eoff, presented at the California Academy of Science's Hawai'i NightLife event. 1,500 attendees had the opportunity to learn about the star compass and star lines, "drive" through the near universe exhibit featuring voyaging tools and implements, and see the latest Na'alehu Anthonony documentary, Papa Mau, Wayfinder.
The Pacific Peoples Partnership hosted the Pacific Wayfinder Conference: Celebrating Indigenous Knowledge and Leadership, 35 Years of Action & Solidarity, at the University of Victoria in British Columbia. The partnership is a collaborative effort of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Islands and Pacific Rim. Kalepa Baybayan delivered the keynote address, He Lani Ko Luna, A Sky Above.
| Baybayan with Hokule'a Crew Members Snake AhHee & Ka'iulani Murphy in Tahiti |
In Papeete, Tahiti, Baybayan participated in crew training and community workshops on voyaging and navigation. These workshops were held in conjunction with the Tahitian voyaging canoe Fa'afaite, who along with 6 other deep-sea canoes intend to sail to Hawai'i next Spring. The planned voyage will be the largest contingent of deep-sea canoes in the modern voyaging era to attempt a crossing as a singular fleet.

Gourd Cultivation at 'Imiloa
The Polynesian colonists who peopled the Hawaiian Archipelago brought seeds and cuttings of many useful plants. Among them was the ipu (gourd), which was used more extensively here than any other place in the Pacific Basin. Gourd cultivation was developed in Hawai 'i and ipu played an important role in the life of early Hawaiians where they were crafted into bowls, plates, covered containers, drums, and canoe bailers. In our efforts to perpetuate these traditions, 'Imiloa is cultivating a gourd garden now composed of 6 trellises. We plan to stagger the plantings to determine the best growing parameters. Renown ipu artist, Gary Eoff, is training 'Imiloa volunteers and staff in gourd carving. Our hope is that we will produce enough gourds to offer public gourd-carving workshops in the future.

Life & Arsenic in Mono Lake
|
Credit: Wikipedia, Jodi Switzer Blum |
Life may be stranger than imagined. Bacteria in Mono Lake's 4.5-mile-wide lakebed (shown here from nearby Mount Dana in California) can not only tolerate large amounts of normally toxic arsenic, but also can use arsenic as a substitute for phosphorus. This result is astonishing and perhaps controversial because phosphorus is an element needed by every other known Earth-based life form. The inset shows GFAJ-1, the unusual arsenic-loving bacteria that may be able to survive on another world. The image of GFAJ-1 shows an area less than 20 millionths of a meter across. |
Ianuali (January) Skies 2011
Highlights from the Night Sky - January 2011
- Mercury is visible the second week of January just before sunrise low in the eastern sky.
- Mars is too close to the Sun to see this month and also in February.
- Jupiter is high in the southwest at sunset and is an early evening object. If possible explore with binoculars to see the Galilean Moons.
- Saturn rises around 1am and is visible to sunrise. Small telescopes easily reveal its wonderful rings.
- Venus rises 3 hours before the Sun and is brilliant in the morning sky. Try using binoculars to see its phase.
