Hilo Wayfinding and Navigation Festival
Coming soon is the 3rd Annual Hilo Wayfinding and Navigation Festival which will be held from October 8 to 9. This event, free to the public, offers visitors and residents an opportunity to learn about Hawaiian navigation, culture, and traditions. Each day will feature a different theme: 'Ike Ku'una (Traditions), Mo'olelo (Indigenous Folklore of Native Skies), and E Ola Mau (Revival) - a day in which we celebrate the legacy of Mau Piailug, the famed Micronesian navigator from the Carolinian island of Satawal.
Throughout the weekend there will be hands-on activities, canoe tours and exhibits, canoe plant tours, a planetarium show about the star lines and documentary films about Hawaiian navigation. The afternoons will also include a range of special presentations, cultural arts demonstrations, panel discussions, and indigenous storytelling for keiki and adults alike. Ka Haka 'Ula O Ke'elikolani College of Hawaiian Language Building Design Wins Award
The architectural design for the University of Hawai'i at Hilo Ka Haka 'Ula O Ke'elikolani College of Hawaiian Language Building received the 2010 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honolulu Design Award at the AIA Honolulu, 2010 Annual Design Awards Ceremony held in July.
The CHL design topped eight other entries to win the "Commissioned Work to be Built" category by receiving the highest marks in all areas.
In evaluating each entry, the judges looked for a high level of design resolution that showed exemplary skill and sensitivity in formal function, technical and artistic requirements, advanced contemporary understanding of design by proposing new approaches to the development of architectural form, and considered the project's complexity with regard to budget constraints, site difficulties and program requirements.

Asteroids and Comets We Have Visited
Last month, ESA's robotic Rosetta spacecraft carried out a "flyby" of asteroid 21 Lutetia, the largest asteroid or comet visited so far by robotic spacecraft. The 60-mile-wide Lutetia is shown in comparison with the other nine asteroids and four comets that have been visited by human-launched spacecraft. None of these objects is massive enough to be shaped by gravity into a sphere (Lutetia would have to be about 7 times larger for that to be the case). Orbiting in the main asteroid belt, Lutetia is a cratered remnant of the early Solar System. The Rosetta spacecraft is now on its way to a landing on Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014. The four comets that have been visited by human-launched spacecraft are Halley (Giotto in 1986), Borrelly (Deep Space 1 in 2001), Wild-2 (Stardust in 2004), and Temple 1 (Deep Impact in 2005).

Kepakemapa (September) Skies 2010

Highlights from the Night Sky - September 2010
-
September is a good month to look for the Zodiacal Light an hour to two prior to sunrise. This is a faint glow caused by sunlight reflecting off dust particles in the plane of the solar system.
-
Mercury is at its best the third week of September right after sunrise. Look for it in twilight.
-
Venus is high in the west at sunset and is visible for a full 2 hours after the Sun goes down.
-
Mars is in the west at sunset. A great time to see it is on the 11th when it is in a lovely grouping with Venus and the Moon.
-
Jupiter is at opposition on September 21st, this means it will be visible from sunset to sunrise that day. Earlier in the month it will rise about 30 minutes after sunset.
-
Saturn will be visible the first half of the month in the west at sunset. By the end of the third week it will be lost in the glare of the Sun.
- The Autumnal (Fall) Equinox occurs on the 22nd of the month. At the equinox we experience equal day and equal night (12 hours of each). Both hemispheres of the Earth receive the same amount of sunlight. Equinoxes and solstices are celebrated by many cultures.

Third Saturdays in the Planetarium Maunakea Skies:
Hawaiian Starlight Astronomy Images- A Collection 12 Years in the Making
September 18 at 7pm
A key inspiration for Dr. Jean-Charles Cuillandre to become an astronomer was without any doubt the beautiful true-color photographs he admired in textbooks and magazines as a child. Besides being first and foremost powerful scientific tools to probe the mysteries of the Universe, the giant CFHT digital cameras he has worked on since 1992 (today's flavor is MegaCam with its 340 million pixels) can also be used to capture the beauty of the Cosmos. He started in 1999 an outreach program aimed at collecting pristine images of the Universe in true colors (blue, green, red). This project quickly evolved into a glossy wall calendar project in collaboration with the Italian editor Coelum. The first edition was published in 2000, and 2011 marks the 12th edition of this successful collaboration. Such tedious effort has built a large collection of the visual richness of our Universe. The lecture will cover the story of the calendar, both technically and artistically. The best two images for each of the past 12 years will be presented.
Hosted by Shawn Laatsch, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center's Planetarium Manager. Maunakea Skies is held every third Saturdays at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center Planetarium. $5 for members, $8 for non-members.
Dr. Jean-Charles Cuillandre is a French astronomer for the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), a facility operating atop Maunakea since 1979. He joined CFHT in 1996 after completing a PhD in Astronomy in France. Prior to engaging in the fundamental research world, he received training in engineering as it fitted well his taste for astronomical data processing and instrumentation. His main field of expertise is wide-field optical imaging, from the detectors up to the broad science enabled by such instruments. Being also an astrophotographer, photographer and cinematographer, he uses his free time to develop sky art for CFHT. |

Support Planetarium Programming at 'Imiloa
Have you thought about how you can get more involved and do more beyond your annual membership at 'Imiloa? Member surveys show that the planetarium is a favorite and that bringing new planetarium programming to our center is on the top of our member list of must-haves. Did you know that you can support the addition of diverse and educational planetarium offerings at 'Imiloa through our planetarium seat naming program?
Naming a seat in the world's first 3D stereoscopic planetarium at 'Imiloa is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to leave a permanent legacy in our dome. Consider honoring a loved one and leaving your personal or family legacy for generations of explorers to come. Over 15,000 schoolchildren visit 'Imiloa on school field trips each year, experiencing educational shows in the planetarium where young minds are inspired and where STEM concepts first take shape. In fact, nearly 52,000 people walked through 'Imiloa's doors in the past year alone!
A gift to the planetarium seat naming program is an excellent way to give someone a unique gift, honor someone special, memorialize a family member, commemorate a special occasion, and show your support for 'Imiloa's mission and impact in the local community.
Your gift will entitle you to:
-An engraved nameplate on the back of one or more planetarium seat(s)
-A tax deduction for 100% of your donation
-Permanent recognition at the entrance to the planetarium on the planetarium
donor plaque
-Listing on the Makahiki donor wall in our atrium
Plus, we will make special arrangements for a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the special planetarium technology in our state-of-the-art dome with planetarium manager Shawn Laatsch.
Name one seat for $3,000, two seats for $5,000, or four seats for $10,000. Payments can be arranged via a pledge payment plan. Hurry and reserve your seat now! Many of the seats have already been named - there are less than 30 left of the 120 total and once they're gone, they're gone!
