Uncle Kawaiola's Dream:
A Hawaiian Story
By Victor C. Pellegrino
Uncle Kawaiola's Dream: A Hawaiian Story is an 'aina-based story that focuses on lo'i kalo restoration on Maui. Uncle Kawaiola tells his "dream story" to his niece Naupaka, and nephew Ho'ala. Based on his passion to restore his great grandfather Nahau's 'aina, Uncle Kawaiola faces challenges that he overcomes based on Hawaiian cultural values of laulima and 'ohana. He teaches his niece and nephew that achieving a goal requires the help of one's family and community, and he learns from his mentor Kalima that "taking small steps" toward a goal is the way to reach it.
The story is inspiring, healing, and grounding. It teaches the importance of lokahi and paepae that create good, strong principles. This story will help all readers reconnect with Hawai'i and Hawaiian culture. Although a children's story, Uncle Kawaiola's Dream can be enjoyed by young and old alike.
Come meet Victor C. Pellegrino at his book signing on August 20 from 11:30am-1:30pm in 'Imiloa's atrium.

Image of the Month

Companion of a Young, Sun-like Star
This is the first direct image, taken in 2008, of an extrasolar planet orbiting a star similar to our Sun. Located some 500 light-years away in the direction of Kamakaunuiamaui (Scorpius), the parent star is slightly less massive and slightly cooler than our Sun, yet is only a few million years old compared to the Sun's age of 5 billion years. This infrared image shows the star's planetary companion above and left of center. The young planet has a mass of about 8 times the mass of Jupiter, and orbits at 330 AU (1 AU is the Earth-Sun distance) from its parent, compared to 5 AU for Jupiter and our Sun.

'Aukake (August) Skies 2010

Highlights from the Night Sky - August 2010
-
This month is a great month to see planets as there are numerous planetary conjunctions!
-
Mercury is at its best the first 2 weeks of August right after sunset. Look for it in twighlight.
-
Venus is high in the west at sunset and is visible for a full 3 hours after the Sun goes down. It reaches its highest point on the 9th. This is a great time to look at it with a small telescope and see its crescent phase.
-
Mars is in the west at sunset. A great time to see it is on the 13th when it is in a lovely grouping with Venus, Saturn, and the Moon.
-
Jupiter is visible in late in the evening rising around 11pm at midmonth.
-
The Perseid meteor shower peaks on August 12th and is the best annual meteor shower of the year. It is associated with a short term comet (Temple-Tuttle) and typically has a good show of about 50-70 meteors visible per hour in the early morning. The best time to watch is between 3-5am looking to the northeast. Since the Moon sets early in the evening on the 12th, this years view should be very good.

Third Saturdays in the Planetarium
Olivier Guyon, Subaru Telescope
& University of Arizona Astronomer |
Maunakea Skies:
What Makes a Planet Habitable?
August 21 at 7pm
What makes a planet habitable? Looking for an answer to this fascinating question requires us to understand what conditions make it possible for life to exist on Earth. It will also guide our efforts to look for life on other planets by telling us where to look, and what we might be looking for.
Thanks to new advances in technology, looking for life elsewhere in the Universe is possible and will keep astronomers very busy for decades to come. Great progress has been made recently; we now know of exoplanets and how to look for them. This lecture will cover recent discoveries, describe the techniques planet hunters are using, and discuss what it takes for a planet to be habitable.
Hosted by Peter Michaud, Gemini Observatory's Public Inforamtion and Outreach Manager. Maunakea Skies is held every third Saturdays at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center Planetarium. $5 for members, $8 for non-members.
Olivier Guyon is an astronomer working for the Subaru Telescope and the University of Arizona. His main interest is the search for life in the universe. He is working with scientists and engineers to develop new techniques to image exoplanets (planets around other stars) from space and from ground-based telescopes. Olivier is also an avid amateur astronomer and likes to build and use telescopes. |
