Announcing New Evening Event Series
'Imiloa After Dark
Aloha e 'Imiloa Members!
Based on recent feedback from our member's survey, 'Imiloa is launching a quarterly evening event entertainment series called "Imiloa After Dark" featuring a lively fusion of art, music, fashion, and food.
Members told us that they wanted more evening events, more entertainment opportunities, more to do in Hilo. Sometimes, more isn't just less...more really is more! And guess what? As a member, you'll be the first to know when we have these events and you'll have the first take at available tickets (discounted for members, of course) so you don't miss out!

What do science, sushi and 'Imiloa have in common anyway?
The word " science" comes from the Latin word " scientia," meaning knowledge. And the word '"Imiloa" means " to explore new knowledge." As an informal science education center, part of our mission is to share science in an engaging way that celebrates the facts that: Science is everywhere..... Science is fun.....
Science is relatable....
So whether we talk about the ono sushi from Nihon; what proteins, lipids, and amino acids are, and how they relate to sushi; or the molecular structures of isothiocyanates; we're working to engage you in the wonders of science and the world around us.
Oh yeah......by the way, isothiocyanates are are funky molecular structures in wasabi that have carbon, nitrogen and sulfur lined up next to each other. Unlike other molecules that set our taste buds on fire (capsaicin in chili peppers, for example), isothiocyanates are water soluble. That's why you can actually cleanse your palate pretty easily if you get a little too much of the green stuff.
