GIVE THE GIFT OF GIVING
Lauri Meyer was looking for a special gift for each of her daughters for the holidays. She wanted a gift that reflected her interest in giving back to the community. "No matter how old your children are, I think it's really important to teach them to give back to the community," said Meyer, who is a former Eastland Community Foundation board member. Then, Meyer discovered Charity Giving Cards. The cards look a lot like a retail card, except rather than going to a mall to redeem them on merchandise, the cards can be redeemed online for a favorite nonprofit organization. Introduced just last year by the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, the cards are a first in the country. Meyer was able to buy the cards online for $25, $50 or $100 and receive a tax deduction. Her daughters could then go to www.gkccf.org to redeem them on any nonprofit organizations in the country. "We hope to increase the number of people who can become involved in giving charitably," said Debbie Starke, executive director of the Eastland Community Foundation, which is a regional affiliate of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. "With cards available for as little as $25, we hope to make it easier for people to give to the causes that they care about." Since the cards were introduced, more than $61,000 has been given back to the community through the giving card program. Several companies are working with the Community Foundation to create a private label with their own logo to clients at the end of the year. To purchase or learn more about Giving Cards, visit www.gkccf.org or call 816-842-0944. |
