Of course, traditional favorites will be here too.  Timmy Burgers, Bingo, the Southern Fun Carnival, local dance groups, karate demonstrations, crafts and much, much more.
What's New With The EDC?
The Blue Springs Economic Development Corporation (EDC) works alongside the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce, City of Blue Springs and Blue Springs School District and hundreds of local companies to support and encourage growth, development and investment in Blue Springs.   The driving force behind our mission is reflected in our current promotional theme, which seeks to project an attitude of strategy, optimism and action in securing opportunities for our current and future growth and investment momentum.
Think EDCTHINK. The EDC's staff, board and membership are pro-
actively working with the leadership of key stakeholder organizations from throughout Blue Springs in partnership to help improve the community. The EDC's strategies THINK about new types of opportunities and ways to support our existing business core, stimulating new growth, and targeting existing businesses and priority development opportunities.
BELIEVE.  The EDC has been busy working with its stakeholder partners to attract and maintain regional and national attention on the development, investment and growth opportunities available in Blue Springs. One significant result has been watching the Greater Kansas City business community BELIEVE in the exciting future of Blue Springs. Through the hard work and collaboration of local builders, developers, business owners and investors, the EDC has proactively participated in hundreds of meetings, promotional events and conferences over the past 18 months promoting Blue Springs.
DO. No one would have dared to dream four years ago that Blue Springs would be experiencing several hundreds of million dollars in new projects completed, underway, planned or proposed throughout the community in such a short period of time. Beyond what has already happened or been proposed, we are pleased to report that staff is busier than ever working with companies, projects and individuals that are making plans to DO their next investment, expansion or development in Blue Springs.

Please stay-tuned as your EDC works to increase the results that bring more development and supporting initiatives in 2008!  If you have any questions, please contact us at 816-228-0208 or visit our website, which will be updated in the next 60 plus days with new features, graphics and resources at www.THINKbluesprings.com.
City Newscity
The Blue Springs F.I.T. (Families In Training) Challenge is a kick off event for the entire community to get excited about healthy lifestyle choices. The goal of the Blue F.I.T. Challenge is to focus on a variety of family health issues including childhood obesity, as well as make Blue Springs the most fit city in the country in a way that is fun and simple to implement into everyday life. With this event, we will increase awareness and provide tools for our community to make healthy choices about food and physical activity. We want to provide real tools for real people. With this event, we hope to stimulate every business, school, church, and family, etc. in Blue Springs to find some way to participate in this challenge. This event is only the beginning, we will continue our efforts throughout the year in various ways.

Blue Springs FitAt the event on the 20th, we will have a booth available to measure family BMI's, then next year, we will reassess each families' BMI and measure our success. The event is totally free and will have many options for people of all ages to get healthy food choice information, physical activity choices, freebies and more. 2nd Annual SidePockets Charity Golf Tournament

Please come and play Golf for Charity Monday, September the 8th at Adams Pointe for The 2nd Annual "SIde Pockets Open" golf tournament.  This tournament benefits "Carter's Gift from the Heart."  A good friend of Side Pocket's, Todd Grace, son tragically dies of a very rare heart ailment when he was four years old. This is an ailment that could have been saved if there were portable defribulators at school.  This is what we are raising money for, and having a great time in the process. TSide Pockets Restaurant makes no profit from this tournament.

There will be a shotgun start at 8 AM.  On the course free beer will be provided, and there will be games on many holes.  After which, everyone is invited back to Side Pockets for a free buffet and awards ceremony.  Prizes will be awarded for 1st-3rd place, and have two flights if we have a full field.  As of right now we have over 90 players, and want to extend this invitation to chamber members who would liek to play for a great cause and have  a great time.

Teams are $60 per person, or $360 per team. Hole sponsorships are $150, or $100 if you have  a team.  Come join us for a great day of fun for a terrific cause!

School District Updatebssd
On Tuesday, August 19th, over 14,000 students were welcomed at 22 program sites across the district.  In preparing for the school year, K-12 teachers were involved in three new professional development initiatives related to science, mathematics, and social studies.

summer instituteA partnership with the Center and Hickman Mills School District and Rockhurst University was recently formed to establish an exemplary professional development initiative in the area of science.  Participants attended a two-week summer institute to increase their knowledge of the Missouri Science Content Strands.  Participants also developed units featuring real world science applications and state of the art technology.

Math teachers were involved in a special project implemented in cooperation with the Hickman Mills School District, Center School District, and Rockhurst University.  During the summer, cohort teachers were exposed to research-based strategies and worked collaboratively in designing lessons for students who scored below the proficiency level on the MAP, Explore, Plan, or ACT.  Cohort teachers will also assist KCPT with the creation of eight instructional videos.

American history was the topic of study for middle and high school teachers enrolled in an innovative consortium with the Kansas City School District and University of Missouri-Kansas City.  Over the course of the summer, their understanding of significant events in American history was examined and improved so that a comprehensive "toolbox" containing interactive skills sets, a wide variety of resource materials, and an overview of relevant websites could be created.

Fire District Receives National Accreditation
August 14, 2008, The Central Jackson County Fire Protection District (CJCFPD) received full fire service accreditation through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI).  CFAI is the accrediting agency that assists fire service organizations around the world in achieving organizational and professional excellence through strategic self-assessment and the accreditation process to provide a continuous quality improvement and enhancement of service delivery to the community.  CJCFPD

CJCFPD is one of two Fire Departments in the Kansas City Metropolitan area to meet the accreditation standards and is one of 122 fire departments internationally to be accredited.  The staff and personnel at the CJCFPD have been working towards accreditation for the past three years, embarking on a process that truly enhanced the level of service we provide to the communities we serve.

On top of the Department's accreditation status Fire Chief Steven Westermann and Deputy Chief Todd Farley were awarded their Chief Fire Officer Designation (CFOD) through the Center of Professional Excellence, a division of CFAI.  The CFOD process is much like the process of fire service accreditation only at the individual Chief Officer level.  Experience, education, training, community involvement, fire service involvement, administration, and verification of competencies are all assessed by peer Chief Officers and CFAI staff to ensure the individual Chief Officer has met or exceeded the expectations of the CFOD candidate.  In this case Chief Steven Westermann was re-accredited and Deputy Chief Todd Farley earned his CFOD for the first time.

On August 26th, members of the Chamber officially Dell's Powersportswelcomed Dell's Powersports to the Blue Springs business community.  Mark Riggin & Karl Morrison purchased Dell's Honda from the Woten family in November of 2007. Please stop by and see their showroom on West 40 Highway, just east of Woods Chapel.
