POSITION: WATER LABORATORY CHEMIST
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS
PAY GRADE: A19
WAGE: $52,665.81 - $80,136.99
DEADLINE: AUGUST 22, 2007
JOB CHARACTERISTICS: Under direction of the
water general manager, is responsible for the
operation of the Water Division's laboratory
facilities. Professional and scientific
skills are utilized in the performance,
coordination and supervision of laboratory
activities. Independent judgment is
exercised within area of expertise which does
not go beyond the bounds of established
department rules, standards and policies as
well as requirements set forth by the federal
and state environmental protection agencies
and the Illinois Department of Public Health.
REQUIRES: Bachelor degree in chemistry or
biology or equivalent from an accredited
college or university and five years
progressively responsible laboratory
experience including two years in a
managerial capacity and preferably some
public water supply experience; or any
equivalent combination of training and
experience which provides the required
knowledge, skills and abilities. Compliance
with City Residency Policy within prescribed
time period.
Thorough knowledge of the operation and care
of specialized laboratory equipment and
regulations governing city, state and federal
environmental protection agencies and the
Illinois Department of Public Health;
knowledge of the scientific theories,
regulations, and quality control procedures
related to laboratory operations.
Exceptional skill in public, employee and
labor relations and in maintaining effective
working relationships; advanced skill in
organizing, completing and reporting on
projects; maintaining accurate records;
developing and maintaining manual and
computerized record systems of water analysis
and laboratory operations; and operating
Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
·Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality
of the materials and situations encountered
on the job; read, analyze and interpret
complex documents such as policies,
regulations, instructions, procedure manuals,
diagrams, schedules and labor agreements;
respond effectively to inquiries or
complaints; write clear and concise reports,
business correspondence and work procedures;
effectively respond to questions from
managers, employees, elected officials and
the general public; define problems, collect
data, establish facts and draw valid
conclusions; and plan, supervise, schedule
and direct the work of subordinate employee.
·Valid Illinois driver's license or
equivalent; certification from the Illinois
Department of Public Health to conduct
heterotrophic plate counts, total coliform
and fecal coliform bacteriological analysis.
