When You Want To Remove It, Don't Settle For A Piece Of The Pie

Do you remember how fast your new computer was when you first plugged it in? And how it has slowed to a snail's pace over the years? Neat Net Tricks has featured some 5,000 software downloads in its 15 years of publication and most of those have been free. It's hard to resist "free" and many readers have downloaded and tried out many of those neat programs. It's a fact that those programs should be removed if you now find they are doing little more than occupying real estate in your computer.

Developers often construct their programs to install rapidly and easily and, of course, that's always something we look for with any software; but, at least equally important is how completely that same program will uninstall. Unfortunately, many programs fail miserably in this respect and the uninstaller the developer provides us, if in fact he provides anything at all, fails to remove parts of the program. Using the Windows "Add Or Remove Programs" applet in the Control Panel is pretty much a waste of time as well. Unexpected errors often occur or, as is more frequently the case, the program doesn't even appear in the populated list, and we become bewildered as to how to remove it.

When uninstalling a program by a conventional means, you can almost be certain that some remnants remain in the Registry and this accumulated gunk will slow your computer and inevitably cause problems down the road. If you're comfortable with mucking around the Registry, you can remove these leftover remnants by going to your desktop Start button, clicking on Run, then entering "Regedit" (without quotes). Then, in the Registry Editor, search for all entries containing the name of the program you uninstalled. Click the entries and press Delete to remove them. Close the Registry editor and reboot your computer for the changes to take effect. But, one word of caution: You are treading into dangerous waters and a slip can make your computer a nice paperweight. Be sure to back up your Registry before you begin and don't even attempt this unless you are at least moderately computer-literate.

As one alternative, you can periodically clean your Registry with a number of applications for that purpose. NNT has featured some very good Registry cleaners, such as JV16 Power Tools ( http://www.macecraft.com/ ) and CCleaner ( http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner ). That's a lot like dismantling a carburetor and giving it a good periodic cleaning from time to time. I had rather avoid the gunk in the first place and one way I can do that is to make sure, when I remove a program from my system, that I remove the entire thing. I need something that will uninstall all the bits and pieces that will eventually cause me problems if I leave them intact.

Over many years, I have relied steadfastly on Revo Uninstaller as a much better, faster, and more reliable alternative to anything else available. Only in the past year or so have I have become convinced that one thing beats it: the Revo Uninstaller Pro version offers so much more. These features are listed at http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_uninstall_features.html . I'll let you do your own research on this, but I'd like to point out just some that, for me, make the Revo Uninstaller Pro shine:

  • There's a feature that will monitor when you install a program, so that it will "remember" all the details in the event you wish to uninstall that program. With this information. it does the job, safely and completely, with a single click;

  • Revo's "Forced Uninstall" will remove a program when it has no built-in uninstaller or the uninstall did not otherwise complete or is corrupted;

  • The "Hunter Mode" is a fantastic feature tthat targets and removes unwanted software, particularly all that unwanted trial stuff that comes preinstalled with new computers;

  • Safeguards are built in to create complete backups before programs are removed. Remember my earlier caution to do backups? Revo does it for you automatically;

  • Lots of additional tools including Auto Start Manager, Windows Tool Manager, Junk Files Cleaner, Browser History Cleaner, and more, in one nifty package; and,

  • Free lifetime rapid support (I mean, responses in just hours) along with free updates and upgrades.

  • The Neat Net Tricks Software Review Panel recently reported on Revo Uninstall Pro with a lot more information than I have room for here. You can see the Panel's comments at http://www.neatnettricks.com/SoftwareReviews/2010/review-revo-uninstaller-pro.html .

    You can give this powerhouse a thorough try and experience all its features in a 30-day free trial at http://www.revouninstaller.com/ . Unless I miss my guess, you won't need 30 days to decide that Revo Uninstaller Pro is something you'll use often. And when you do decide, save 30% and pay $27.47, not $39.25, but only if you go to this link to order:
