Greetings!
January is almost over! We can't believe it. We are well on our way to spring. Which means that MMSC's Encore Series is in full swing and our spring season can't be far behind. EncoreSerieslogo

We were delighted to see so many of you a couple of weeks ago at Encore #1 - Jeffrey Harcher's hilarious Murderers. Get out those calendars and plan to see the remaining two encores and the regional premiere of Opus, coming up at the end of March.

Michael Hollinger's Opus has been billed at "Sex, drugs, and chamber music!" by Charles Isherwood of the New York Times. According to TCG's American Theatre magazine, Opus was one of the top ten most performed plays at Regional Theatres in 2009. We can't wait!

Next up, on Friday and Saturday, January 29 & 30, a hilarious hit from our recent fall 2009 Season, Funny You Should Say That, the letters of Fred Allen and Groucho Marx.

Grouchp Marx
Often remembered as the wiseacre member of the The Marx Brothers films of the 1930s and 1940s, Groucho Marx became an icon of 1950s television as the comic quizmaster of the long-running "You Bet Your Life."

Fred Allen hated television. Allen was a radio comedian who as early as 1936 had a weekly radio audience of about 20 million. When he visited The Jack Benny Show to continue their long running comedy feud, they had the largest audience in the history of radio until FDR's Fireside Chats.

Groucho Marx and Fred Allen were avid letter-writers and friends and maintained correspondence with each other over the years. FUNNY YOU SHOULD SAY THAT follows that correspondence.

Original concept by Pam Courselle and Cheryl Rice.

Edited and selected by Christine Crawfis and Catherine Cattabiani.

Performed by Richard and Catherine Cattabiani.

OPUS

OPUS

By Michael Hollinger

Directed by Christine Crawfis

Featuring Michael Frohnhoefer, David Mossey, Thom Webb, Gerry Brooks and Janet Nurre

In a world where characters are instruments and scenes are movements, a world-class, high-strung string quartet prepares for their highest-profile performance ever.  As musical ambitions collide with personal dynamics, their rehearsal room becomes a pressure cooker and their world begins to fall apart.  Passions rise, personalities clash, and the players are forced to confront the ephemeral nature of their life's work.

"Sex, drugs, and chamber music!"

"...marked by a nuanced intelligence in its depiction of the complex relationship between musician's lives and their art."

- Charles Isherwood, New York Times
