Raw, powerful, visceral. Sweet, tender, quiet. Rowdy, funny, bawdy. It's the energy that draws you forward in your seat. It's the pulse that makes you engage. It's the spark that makes you think.

Prologue MMSC's mostly monthly newsletter
"You'd think by now evolution could've at least evolved us to the place where we could change ourselves." Trudy, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe by Jane Wagner
|
Greetings!
What a week!
When Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe took Broadway by storm in 1985, both FaceBook and Barack Obama weren't even specks on the horizon. Now, this week, we will be swearing in our first president of the digital age.
In Jane Wagner's award winning play, a group of space aliens relays their view of mankind to us through the visions of their earth chum Trudy, a New York City bag lady. They can't understand why earthlings don't get that everything is connected; as they say " we all time share the same atoms - every particle affects every other particle everywhere."
And here we are, a mere 23 years later, proving that Trudy's space pals might have been on to something.
First, we now have the infinite capabilities for interpersonal interconnection made possible by the digital universe and exemplified by Facebook. With Facebook, we literally can be connected with everyone everywhere simultaneously.
(In our last newsletter, we asked for reaction to our idea of starting a Facebook page for MMSC. Opinions ranged from the excited to the unprintable. We'll report later.)
Second, we have elected a president who seems to understand that interconnectedness - -and who uses Facebook.
Are we on the threshold of a new phase in the evolution of our species? Will Trudy's vision ("people as a whole-what a good idea") become reality?
Please help us celebrate this momentous week by tuning in to Trudy's extraterrestrial wavelength and sharing her vision of the future - or perhaps, we might hope, the present.

The Year of Magical Thinking
A Play by Joan Didion Based on Her Memoir
Sometimes, one person seated on a stage can illuminate a world. One of America's greatest
writers, Didion both adapts and expands upon her award-winning,
bestselling memoir about the year following the sudden loss of her
husband, John Gregory Dunne, to also tell about the unexpected death of
their only child. Didion transforms her most personal story of love and
loss to touch us all with astonishing intimacy, surprising humor, and
language that is fresh and new.

Soup or Art?
"Art or Soup?" "Soup or Art" In Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, the wacky bag lady, Trudy, has a recurrent motif; she keeps trying to remind herself that there is a difference between art (as exemplified by Andy Warhol's silk-screened prints of Campbell's Soup cans) and the soup itself. "Art or soup?" she ruminates. What do you think? Tell us. Send us your thoughts.

NEXT UP!
Encore #2 From Our 1998 Season
January 23 & 24 Unison Arts Center - 8 PM
by Jane Wagner Directed by Robert Miller Featuring Janet Nurre, Ann Citron, Elizabeth Barrows and Christine Crawfis. Winner of the New York Drama Desk Award, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and a Tony for Best Actress for Lily Tomlin, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe ran to nonstop standing-room-only crowds for almost two years on Broadway and in Los Angeles. A wonderfully comic and painful dose of
truth direct to the heart. The play begins as Trudy, the
bag lady, tries to explain our modern American material society to a fact-finding committee from outer space. The play ends with a hymn to the
creative spirit.
"A work of genius and compassion." -Gloria Steinem
"Search...is a living anthropological exhibit. That makes it funny, grab-your-sides funny. But it is also a chronicle of the human heart, trying to mend its bruises and ease its disappointments. And that makes it sublime, catch-your-breath sublime." Washington Post
