Greetings!
HERE WE GO AGAIN (AGAIN) . . . Well it's that time. Dean Acheson referred to it as the "quadrennial donnybrook" and it means that we are in for another two months of finger-pointing, breast-beating, flag-waving, passions, promises and intellectual petrifaction. My friends, it is once again MMSC's mission to provide you, our loyal audience, with an alternative: moments of sanity, clarity and humor amidst the bombast. Accordingly, we have lined up one of the most challenging and entertaining fall seasons IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD! CHANGE is our motto!!!! We promise you plays which no one has done, or dared to do, in the Hudson Valley; plays ranging from the bafflingly mysterious ( A Body of Water), to the comically surreal ( Darwin in Malibu) to the timely and powerful ( Doubt, a parable) to the unapologetically preposterous ( A Tuna Christmas). Rounding out the ticket are two of America's greatest women authors, Dorothy Parker and Emily Dickinson (two small town gals who can truly talk the talk) and our ever popular free-for-all, our actor-audience literary challenge, our Cold Buffet. Please peruse our platform of performances which is detailed herein. We believe we have something for everyone, a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage and lots of gas for all. God bless America, the Marx Brothers and Rock and Roll! (Cue Kate Smith and the balloons.) Our line-up begins next weekend on September 19 & 20 with the Hudson Valley premiere of Darwin in Malibu, an evolved comedy. We continue on September 26 & October 3 with Lee Blessing's A Body of Water; we were lucky enough to obtain the performance rights to this new mystery-puzzle of a play just before it opens in New York City. Check out the articles below. Below you will find a brief report on How We Spent Our Summer Vacation as well as an important note about new box office policies at Unison Arts. Read on. By the way, this year begins our 15th season. We hope you will help us celebrate. Join us.
Sincerely,
Bob

A Hudson Valley Premiere Darwin in Malibu by Crispin Whittell
An Evolved Comedy .

Malibu, California. The present. One hundred twenty years after his death, Charles Darwin is hanging out in a house overlooking the Pacific with a girl young enough to be his daughter. His peace is rudely disturbed when his old friend Thomas Huxley washes up on the beach, closely followed by the Bishop of Oxford. Darwin suddenly finds himself entangled in a sparkling comedy of life and death, love and loss, and the sex life of hermaphroditic barnacles. You may think you know how a discussion between the father of evolution and one of evolution's most outspoken critics would go, but you will be surprised.
Co-sponsored by Mayo Consulting. Directed by Christine Crawfis. Featuring Don Wildy, Gerard Brooks, Laurence Carr and Janet Nurre.
"Fiercely intelligent - an exceptionally spry play with big ideas and a big heart. You should see it - " Guardian (London)

A Hudson Valley Premiere A Body of Water by Lee Blessing A Mystery-Puzzle of a Play.
Who are we without our memories? Moss and Avis, an attractive middle-aged couple, awake one morning in an isolated house high above a picturesque body of water. The weather's great; the view's magnificent. There's only one problem - they can't remember who they are or whose house they are in. When a young woman arrives, information starts to flood in. But will it help? Her explanations only make Moss and Avis's world more terrifying.
A Body of Water is a haunting new play that explores the slippery nature of reality and conviction. Lee Blessing is the author of such notable plays as the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize nominated A Walk in the Woods and the Outer Critic's Circle Award winner, Going to St. Ives.A Body of Water will open in NYC two weeks after MMSC performs it. Scoop your neighbors; see it first. You will be talking about this play for days. Co-sponsored by Mayo Consulting. Directed by Robert Miller Featuring Bruce Pileggi, Christine Crawfis and Elizabeth Barrows "the work of a mature master dramatist in complete control of his materials." What We Did Last Summer
Tomatoes. Anyone?

OK, so we over-planted. We love fresh garden tomatoes in the summer and in the winter we love that refreshing taste of tomato sauce made from from our own toms. So, we planted about 35 pasta and table tomatoes plants and about 10 cherry tomato plants and we are up to our elbows in ever-ripening tomatoes. We may sell them at our next few shows.
Aside from tending tomatoes, we made the annual pilgrimage to Ashland, Oregon, to see our granddaughters (and our son and daughter-in-law) and some real theatre (with sets and costumes and stuff like that).
The three little girls are all growing and are healthy and happy. We took lots of walks with them in the hot, dry Ashland weather.
The plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival ranged from inspirational to annoying. The Festival seems to have abandoned its roots of "two passions and a board" for the embrace of state-of-the art technology and all of its glittering possibilities. While sometimes dazzling to watch, productions were often too much show and too little go.
Although it's fun to see how the other half lives, we'll stick to the script, two passions and a music stand.

New Box Office Policies At Unison
All of the good folks here at MMSC have been very casual about reservations for our performances. And we want you to continue to enjoy MMSC and so, we want to make you aware of a new Box Office policy at one of our venues, Unison Arts Center. In order to alleviate lines and waiting at the Box Office, there is a new charge for tickets purchased at the door.
The Unison Office is open Monday-Friday, 10 am-4 pm. On
performance nights, the box office in the lobby is open half an hour prior to
showtime but there is now a $2 additional charge for tickets purchased at the door.
Reservations require pre-payment, either in person or over the
phone. You can inquire about a reservation using email and they will call you back, but they cannot take reservations
directly through email.
Unison accepts cash, checks, VISA and MasterCard.
