Our journey begins with the regional premiere of an award-winning play by Canadian playwright John Mighton. Friday night (3/14) is opening night for a two week-end run of Half Life, a Romeo and Juliet for the retired set. WAIT! There's more. - a look at the rest of MMSC's Spring Break '08.
- and the premiere of a new/old column, Bob Sez. (a new version of a column which was featured in our old paper-version of this newsletter. And despite popular demand, we've chosen to bring it back in electronic form.)

Can the heart remember what the mind has forgotten?
Clara and Patrick meet in a nursing home and fall in love, thinking they are rekindling an old flame. Have they met before? As Clara and Patrick's middle-aged children watch their faltering parents, the older couple rediscovers beauty and love in the twilight of their lives.
Poignant, masterfully understated and surprisingly funny, Half Life is a finely observed and heartfelt look at aging, love, memory and what makes us human.

A New Newsletter Feature
Bob Sez
A couple of weeks ago I attended a conference on new technologies and had my eyes opened big time. While I realize that many of our esteemed audience members are technologically savvy, some of us are still struggling to come to terms with the phone-answering machine. So, as a public service, I thought I would offer a primer in one of the biggest tech sensations to come down the Information Superhighway since Al Gore invented it.
As you know, MMSC is based on that ancient communication paradigm of people sitting in the same real space actually saying things to another real person and then responding in real time.
But there is a whole new world out there, literally. It's a 3D virtual world called Second Life (SL). I've known of the existence of this phenomenon for some time but thought it was primarily a place where technogeeks played games with each other; or that when people told you to "Get a Life," that's where you went.
But No. Second Life is a virtual world accessed through the Internet (www.secondlife.com), populated by over 12 million residents who socialize, develop relationships and have sex (although I think I prefer the old fashioned way), conduct business and get an education. Some real world entities that have a presence on SL are Dell, the BBC, IBM, and Addidas as well as universities including Harvard, Princeton, Vassar and NYU.
The first requirement for participating in SL is to create an avatar, which is a virtual representation of yourself. Here is your chance to construct the you that you have always wanted: thinner, taller, shorter, groovier, hairier or boobier, all without nipping, tucking or implanting.
Next you need some cash-in case you want to buy stuff. You simply purchase Linden Dollars (the official currency of SL) at the change rate of 266 LDs to one US dollar. Now you are ready to go. The basic account is free and allows you to travel, shop and attend events. For a premium paid membership, you can buy property, build your dream house and throw parties.
So, will MMSC be giving presentations in Second Life anytime soon? Well. We're thinking about it. Our Director of Advance Performance Technologies is checking into this and will report back as soon a he figures out how to log onto the Internet.
Stay tuned.
|
And remember, until we are able to work out the kinks in our virtual Avatars, MMSC's Spring Break '08 Season will be presented the old-fashioned way - on stools, with stands and in person.
Join us for Half Life. You won't regret it.
Sincerely,
Bob and all of the good folks at MMSC
