Fox Valley Physical Therapy and Wellness
Chris and Mary Kelly were physical therapists working in different practices in the Tri-Cities. They wanted to open their own practice so they could combine their different areas of clinical expertise to provide a more specialized treatment approach for their clients. Chris is an expert in orthopedics and manual therapy, and is one of only nine physical therapists in Illinois who has achieved CFMT certification, (Certified Functional Manual Therapy). Mary is a board certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist with expertise in neurological and developmental treatment.
They weren't sure how to go about starting their own clinic, so they approached the IL Small Business Development Center at Waubonsee for help. They spent several months developing their business plan and fine tuning their financial forecast. During that time, they evaluated a variety of locations, working with the SBDC to determine the financial viability of each location. After several attempts, they finally found the right space, and, with the help of a co-signer, were able to procure a line of credit to finance the business.
Fox Valley Physical Therapy and Wellness opened in October, 2010. The first few months were challenging. Their initial costs exceeded their projections, and they juggled cash flow challenges, as they began building their practice. However, by March, they were seeing over 300 clients a month and making a profit for the first time. They report: "Clients are really benefiting from the blending of our two approaches. We are getting results faster and we are helping our clients reach their goals. This is very satisfying and reassures us that opening our own business was the right thing to do."
The Kelly's have continued to seek help from the SBDC for input on marketing, cash flow management, and hiring a new employee. "Working with the Small Business Development Center has been an extremely positive experience, and has been responsible for the success of our business thus far. We came into this with a dream, but lacking the knowledge of how to make that dream a reality. The SBDC has helped us to fulfill our dreams."
You will find Chris and Mary Kelly pursuing their dream, and helping you feel better at Fox Valley Physical Therapy and Wellness, 2011 Dean St. in St. Charles, 60174. You can call them at 630-549-0511, or visit them online at www.fvphysicaltherapy.com.

Partnerships - Keys to a Successful Business Marriage
I meet with many clients who are in business Partnerships or are debating whether to go solo, or take on a partner. I have seen fruitful, productive relationships that result in a strong, growing business; I have also seen fraud, lawsuits, and destroyed businesses, families and friendships.
There is no question that a Partnership is like a marriage. You will invest time, money and trust into building a business with a partner. It is likely that you will have conflict and disagreements, at a minimum, as you make decisions about the business.
At the heart of a good Partnership is a solid, legal partnership agreement drawn up by a good small business attorney. For details on how to proceed w ith a Partnership, I turned to two local attorneys, Rick Williams, Griffin Villa Williams, LLP and Scott Fintzen, Gaido & Fintzen, who are regular advisors to the IL SBDC at Waubonsee.
Williams concurs with the marriage analogy. "A Partnership is like a marriage - easy to get into, but hard to get out of." He cautions that oral 'agreements' at the onset of the relationship often result in future disputes. Williams advises Partners to form a corporation or limited liability company. "Partners acting in the scope of the partnership business can personally bind their other partners for partnership obligations. Your partner can expose you to a great deal of liability, which can be limited in an incorporated entity."
Fintzen agrees. Fintzen also recommends having a candid conversation with potential partners: "This is not the time to be shy or polite. Tough or uncomfortable issues should be addressed, not avoided. Differing points of view need to be reconciled, or, if they cannot be reconciled, the partnership should be reconsidered." To help you get that conversation started, Fintzen has compiled list of important issues facing business partners.
Partnerships should make sure they are adequately insured - a relatively small expense in the overall cost of starting a business. "Partners are personally liable for judgments against the partnership, so if someone gets hurt on your business property, you may be liable for the claims," states Williams.
Both Williams and Fintzen stress the importance of developing a well researched business plan. Fintzen stresses that, "the business plan, along with discussions with your partners, will provide the information needed to have an informed conversation with your professional team about your business." Williams recommends including an exit plan to address things like what will happen if your business fails, or if one partner wants to exit the business.
For help putting that business plan together, contact the IL SBDC at Waubonsee at (630) 906-4143 or sbdc@waubonsee.edu.
