Boss Automotive
Vic Portincaso came to the IL SBDC at Waubonsee last year for assistance in purchasing a business. Like many others in the manufacturing industry, his job as an engineer at Molex was outsourced to China. With the opportunity to make a change in his life, he decided to take the plunge into entrepreneurship. Vic worked with a business broker to identify potential business opportunities, and found an automotive repair and restoration business that offered a great opportunity for Vic and his son, Chris, who is an automotive repair technician. Working with the IL SBDC, Vic put his business plan together, and evaluated the acquisition opportunity. During the course of negotiations with the business owner, Vic and Chris hit it off with the owner, Mark. They decided to form a two-year partnership to help ensure the long term success of the business, leading up to Vic's acquisition of the business in 2012. Boss Automotive is now in the process of a makeover. Vic is taking over all the management functions of the business, as Mark works with Chris on the automotive side. They are planning to add repair contracts with more insurance companies, grow the restoration business, which already has a strong local reputation, and add more mechanical services. The long term objective is to move into larger space in their current complex as they grow. "Since this was my first endeavor I had ever taken into entrepreneurship there were many things I needed to learn first when it came to selecting the right type of business for my needs and understanding the steps I needed to take for success. I was delighted to discover the services provided by SBDC. With the guidance and resources provided to me by SBDC I learned to properly identify the type of business I was attracted to and determine what I needed to get started." Vic Portincaso Boss Automotive is located west of Randall road at 39W207 Highland Ave., Elgin, IL 60124. They can be reached at (847) 841-7800 or online at http://bossautomotiveinc.net. |

I AM SALES |
How many of the employees in your business are salespeople? Hopefully you said, "All of them." If not, you may be missing an opportunity to attract new customers. Take time to evaluate how each of your employees interacts with existing or potential customers. Every person in your company who has direct contact with customers has the opportunity to impact your sales, both positively and negatively.
Develop training to help employees who may not consider themselves salespeople to be more aware of opportunities to promote the business, and more prepared to take advantage of those opportunities. One business had all employees wear buttons that said, "I Am Sales" to keep them thinking about their role as a spokesperson for the business.
On the flip side, be aware of how employees might be adversely affecting your sales efforts. I recently heard an example from a friend who asked a service person at her car dealer why they didn't wash her car after a service visit. She mentioned several other dealerships that provided that service. The service rep flippantly suggested that the customer should buy her next car from one of these other dealers. You never know... she just might do that.
