Here's the story behind this special initiative:

NMBC Teams with Daley Institute
To Grow Minority Businesses

NEW YORK -- In an effort to help minority businesses make significant progress toward profitable growth in a challenging economy, John F. Robinson, President and CEO of the National Minority Business Council, Inc., announced a business growth initiative in cooperation with the Daley Institute for Business Transformation, a business advisory firm.

"Starting a new business is tough. Growing a business is even tougher," said Robinson. "The old adage, 'You can't do it alone,' is especially relevant to owners of smaller businesses in today's economy."

John R. Daley, president of the Daley Institute in St. Louis, Missouri, said that the institute's highly structured 24-month Growth Mastery Program significantly increases the odds of success for smaller businesses during a challenging economy.

According to Daley, the institute's program utilizes a number of proven mentoring, coaching, training, and accountability processes that create a powerful methodology for helping business owners grow their businesses and prosper personally. At the center of the Growth Mastery Program are teams of 7 to 12 owners of non-competitive businesses of similar size.

"Individual business owners within the group hold each other accountable and help each other implement a bold and aggressive 24-month growth plan," he said. The Daley Institute's team of experienced business advisors works side-by-side with group members to assure that the implementation plan is always clearly in focus and is ultimately attained.

Among other tools, the Growth Mastery Program includes an in-depth diagnostic of the business that looks at every aspect and department of the business. "Once we know what's working and what isn't," Daley said, "we develop a 2-year growth plan and begin implementing the plan."

The process also utilizes monthly meetings (including quarterly meetings and 2-day retreats), online accountability, online training, executive performance dashboards, a primary mentor/advisor, plus a team of 10 coaches and advisors, each representing a specific expertise.

Robinson said that NMBC would award a limited number of partial scholarships to business owners that qualify for and enter the program. "We are extremely impressed with the depth and breath of this program and its ability to change behavior and strengthen individual businesses."

"While other peer group programs claim to deliver results, our focus is on working side by side with business owners to implement a growth plan," Daley said. He indicated that the program brings about measurable growth and prosperity for the owners.

"We don't just talk about business growth," he said. "Working side by side with business owners, we develop a plan and then focus on implementation and bringing about business growth. We don't just make the business owners feel good or provide random ideas, however valuable they may appear. We are in the trenches changing behavior and helping to transform business owners into business leaders who are building a valuable asset for themselves, their families, their communities, and our world economy."

Client Jay Sturgeon, president of McFadden Lighting in St. Louis said, "Two years ago we were faltering. Every department was experiencing major challenges and we were in trouble. Today, we are healthy and growing by double digits as a result of bringing John Daley and his unique approach into our organization."

Another St. Louis client, Cathy Villhard, president of Batter Up! Cookies commented, "Our revenues are up 50 percent over the same period last year thanks to tools that the Daley team developed and put in place for us. For the first time, we really understand our costs and how to monitor them more effectively."

Villhard added that with Daley's help her company implemented a plan that is building sales and profitability in spite of the economy.
