Dear Friends of Clean Air,

Is it all over?

Dominion has agreed to shut two units by the end of this year and the last two by June 2014, so we see clearly the end to burning coal in Salem. HealthLink is suing Dominion for air pollution violations and, with our lawyers at Conservation Law Foundation, represent the will of the public for reparations to make up for this particular and flagrant flouting of permissible standards.

What's next?

What will happen at the site? Will it be shuttered? Sold? If sold, what will the buyer do with the site? We have been attending meetings and discussions to keep informed. But can the public have an impact on what happens? And how? Perhaps you know a developer who could use this 62 acre site in a way that will bring revenue, beauty and excitement to the area.

How do we work locally for a global solution to dirty energy?

Salem and Swampscott are considering erecting wind turbines. The Lynn Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility is in the process of installing a turbine that will provide the electricity to the facility. The Town of Ipswich has erected one. Hull has two and is planning a third. Ever since Cape Wind was proposed 10 years ago, HealthLink has taken a strong stand in favor of wind power. We hear from the loudly stated nay-sayers who begin their sentences with "I'm all in favor of wind energy but....(not here)." Clean energy sources must be sited somewhere and that may very well be near one of us. HealthLink plans to support wind projects, to inform you about the considerations, and to speak out for clean, sustainable, distributed sources of power.

To get involved locally and learn more, join Greater Salem Green Drinks on Tuesday, August 23, 7-9 p.m. at the Black Lobster, Stromberg's Cove, Salem for an update on local wind power projects.
