Dear 'Links,
The long and important struggle for clean air and improved public health in our region has reached an important landmark. The recent filing for a permanent delist bid by Dominion, the owner of the 58 year-old Salem coal plant, indicates that they don't believe the plant can be profitable and meet the strict clean air regulations in the future.
The Marblehead Reporter, Boston Globe, Patch and Salem News have written detailed articles, published yesterday and today, about this filing. All are cited below, including a write up of Sunday night's well-attended, informational Cost of Coal public forum held in Salem.
The news that the Dominion has filed to retire from the grid has sparked interest and support throughout the Boston area! On Saturday, November 13 a Roll Against Coal bike ride is planned and will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Somerville's Seven Hills Park and end 18 miles later at the Salem coal plant on Fort Ave. at around 1:30 p.m. Friends in and around Boston will be participating and we invite you to join in, either by riding the route and/or meeting the cyclists at the power plant to take a stand for a clean energy future. Following, there will be a photo op with Sierra Club's Beyond Coal petition. For the route, to register, and more information, go to HealthLink.org.
