Dear 'Links,

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will decide whether or not to approve Cape Wind. He will render a decision on April 1st and has asked for comments from the public.

It's a fact - we lag behind the Europeans in clean renewable energy. We need to act now to reduce dependence on foreign energy and help clean our environment and the air. We need to use less energy by being energy efficient and encouraging offpeak use; we need a multi-pronged approach.

To help move our nation toward a clean, sustainable energy future, visit the Take Action website below that tells you how to submit your comments to Sec. Salazar. Please share this link with your friends and add it to your Facebook. Comments are due by Friday, February 12.  http://www.capewind.org/news1057.htm

Letter to the Marblehead Report
February 5, 2009

Dear Editor:

A recent letter to the Reporter calls for abandoning the Cape Wind project, preferring future wind energy technology in the research and development stage. What was the writer thinking? The promise of new technology does not obviate the cost-effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability of today's three-bladed wind turbines. These wind turbines can provide needed energy now that don't poison our air, destroy mountains or require dangerous transportation of waste as do coal, oil and nuclear fuels.

Cape Wind has been under review for more than eight years and is on the verge of receiving its final permit. How long before we begin installing wind energy and stop subsidizing coal, oil and nuclear fuels? HealthLink has worked for fifteen years to force the owners of the Salem Harbor Generating Station to pay attention to their impact on public health. Only regulatory change and threats of law suits have forced them to decrease their polluted emissions. This process has also been slow as molasses.

We need to act now, and also look at the fact that using less energy is one of the best ways to stop destroying the planet and our health. We need energy efficiency and off-peak use. We need a multi-pronged approach and already lag far behind the Europeans. We need to be wary of arguments that seek to make the perfect the enemy of the good and slow down our transition to a healthier, sustainable energy economy.
