REMINDER!

CALL-IN DAY to Governor Patrick
TODAY Tuesday, November 10.

We are outraged that the Governor has been mum on his promise in May 2009 to inform his constituents on what the future holds for the Salem Power Plant.

Recent developments at the power plant have us further OUTRAGED!
  • Dominion has de-listed all four units in the future capacity market and its future intentions are unknown - Burn biomass/trash?  Pack up and leave Salem with a contaminated brownfield and no future plan for the property? Burn filthy coal in a fragile, old facility that has outlived its usefulness?
  • plume school busOpacity violations have been recorded every single Quarter since 2005.
  • Recent incidences at the plant include: fires, steam valve malfunctions, night time firing of boilers so dirty plumes won't be detected, coal dust mishaps, asbestos clean up, chemical spills (inside and outside), skeletal crews, and a deadly explosion. The EPA and Coast Guard were alerted to a serious chemical mistake at the plant last week whereby thousands of gallons of EDTA (cleaning chemical) was mistakenly pumped into the urea tank (NOx control).
  • In 2008, MA Department of Public Safety uncovered ten years of gross neglect by power plant owners and default on required maintenance which led to the explosion in November 2007 killing three workers.
  • Dominion hasn't attempted to provide a plan to meet mercury regulations, as required in a 2005 settlement.
  • Salem Station's NPDES permit (to extract sea water for cooling) expired a decade ago putting Salem Harbor at risk.

CALL GOVERNOR PATRICK
Tuesday, November 10
Phone: 617-725-4005

Hello,
My name is_________ and I'm calling in regards to the Salem power plant.

The out-of-state owners have neglected up keep of this facility and have not invested in significant upgrades. This plant threatens the safety and health of its workers and citizens of Massachusetts.

I urge the Governor to work towards a sustainable energy future and help Salem transition away from a harmful, polluting facility which absolutely must exclude the burning biomass at this facility.

Thank you
