Linking Health and the Environment

HealthLink mission: To protect and improve public health by reducing and eliminating toxins and pollutants from our environment through research, education and community action.

'Links,
We need your help! HealthLink is organizing a network of observers - an Opacity Team - who will be trained to recognize and document pollution violations from the stacks at the Salem Generating Station. We are submitting a grant proposal to train five volunteers at the Eastern Power plantTechnical Associates' (ETA) Visible Emissions Certificate Program. ETA (www.eta-is-opacity.com) is recognized by the EPA as a leader in opacity services and conducts emission training sessions across the country. The 3-day training session will take place in Boston, dates yet to be determined. Trained volunteers will then assist HealthLink in documenting plume opacity for a six month time frame.

We are looking for five people who:
          - can attend the three day session,
          - see the plant regularly and easily, and
          - are willing to take responsibility for observing and reporting on the plume.

Interested individuals should contact HealthLink at [email protected]. Help us recruit volunteers by passing on this opportunity to friends and colleagues who live or work with a view of the stacks.

Last night, over 100 concerned citizens attended the "Citizens' Hearing" in the Marblehead High School auditorium to hear updates on the Salem Power Plant and what the future holds. Many who attended expressed health concerns living in the shadow of the stacks and commented on their clean window sills and soot-free decks when the power plant was shut down for six months.

We need to keep pressure on the Power Plant from all angles; the "Opacity Team" is one such effort. Please help!
