Healthlink, in partnership with the Health Care Without Harm campaign (
www.noharm.org ), is seeking an organizer to work on their New England Healthy Food in Healthcare initiative. This initiative focuses on offering support, technical assistance and resource information to hospitals across the country that are interested in assessing their current food procurement practices and moving towards purchasing more nutritionally improved food in hospitals that are also sustainable and responsible for their patients and staff (see www.healthyfoodinhealthcare.org for more information on the project). This 1/2 time position will support the burgeoning activities in the New England region, with a specific focus on the Greater Boston area.
 
Healthlink, located in Swampscott, MA, will be the host organization for this position. HealthLink is a Massachusetts North Shore citizens group working to protect public health by eliminating toxins in the environment through research, education and community action.
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
 
*Help expand HCWH's Boston/New England initiative on healthy food in hospitals by recruiting new facilities.
*Technical assistance support for New England hospitals that are currently working with HCWH on sustainable food procurement.
*Presentations to healthcare professionals, food service directors, dietitians etc.
*Assistance in coordinating a "leadership team" of New England hospitals working on the initiative
*Development and dissemination of a regional newsletter to the participating hospitals
*Participation in monthly conference calls with the National working group.
*Travel to Boston area hospitals, and occasional travel to other States in New England.
 
The ideal candidate for this position is someone who has a great deal of interest in the development of sustainable food systems, local sourcing within institutions, the healthcare industry and issues pertaining to food production and our collective public and environmental health.
 
The ideal candidate will also have good writing, communication and computer skills, experience in community development and organizing, and be able to work independently with little supervision. Pay for this position is $18-20/hour, depending on experience.
 
The candidate will report to and work closely with the New England Healthy Food in Healthcare Coordinator, Michelle Gottlieb, who is based in Marblehead, MA. Space will be available to work out of the Swampscott Healthlink office, though working from home part-time is an option.
