Digital Disaster Zone: Are Your Employees Working in the Digital Equivalent of a Tornado-Stricken Library of Congress?
Digital Disaster Zone
Flying Books
by Peter Wilkerson, Search & Discovery Practice Area Manager

A number of years ago a tornado struck near a university library.  The storm came close enough to break windows and as the wind began to swirl, books were knocked off their shelves, ripped apart and strewn across the building.  It was a nightmare.  Nobody could find anything.

What most companies don't realize is they have more data in their storage devices than was in that one library.

On my laptop I have about 800 megabytes of PDF files I use for different phases of my consulting work.  The PDF's are just part of the library of information I use to help solve clients' problems.  If these files were printed out they would be roughly equivalent to a pickup truck filled with books.

Imagine searching through the bed of a truck looking for a specific page in a book.

Now imagine you paying your employees to go through all the books in a large academic library trying to find what they need, without knowing where to look, and not knowing whether they've found the right pages or latest information.  You are asking your employees to search for data in the digital equivalent of a tornado-stricken library.

Use the chart below to get a sense of just how much data you are asking your employees to work with.

Without an effective search solution, you are asking your users to work in a Digital Disaster Zone.

  • 1 megabyte - a small novel
  • 5 megabytes - the complete works of William Shakespeare
  • 100 megabytes - about 3 feet of shelved books
  • 1 gigabyte - a pickup truck filled with books
  • 2 gigabytes - about 66 feet of shelved books
  • 50 gigabytes - a floor (5,000 sq. ft) of books
  • 1 terabyte - all the X-ray films in a large technological hospital
  • 2 terabytes - an academic research library
  • 10 terabytes - the print collection of the US Library of Congress
  • 2 petabytes - All US Academic Libraries
  • 200 petabytes - all the printed material in the world

Secure Remote Access to iNotes
by Len Barker, Managing Partner - Lotus Practice

 Lotus Mobile Connect

I recently had the pleasure of working with a client to install and configure Lotus Mobile Connect (LMC).  LMC has a client that allows a user to roam between wireless access points without losing their session or to lose wireless access for a period of time and then pick up the session where you last left off.  LMC also offers the ability to setup HTTP access services for secure reverse proxy type access to network resources.  The financial trading company that I was working with was looking for a secure and reliable way to access iNotes from the Internet. Their current implementation of a reverse proxy and Site Minder was not satisfactory primarily because of problems with session management.  Lotus Mobile Connect promised to be a more straightforward solution, and it was!

LMC can be installed on Linux, AIX or Windows.  We chose Windows.  Any LDAP directory or RADIUS server will do for authentication. This was perfect for this project because we were able to use their corporate standard of RADIUS with RSA to authenticate users and then use an LTPA token to manage single sign on between all of the Domino servers.  With Lotus Mobile Connect we were able to easily and securely solve the age-old problem of how to allow access to iNotes servers without placing the servers in the DMZ.

Not many people know that all the benefits of the Rapid Application Development and cost reduction provided by WebSphere Portlet Factory (WPF) is also available for WebSphere Application Server (WAS).   Despite the fact that WPF ships with Portal, WPF can also be used to quickly and efficiently develop J2EE applications to run on WAS.

All the capabilities to access numerous back-end systems, application profiling, Web 2.0 and displaying KPIs or building dashboards are available to run on WAS.

If you run WAS and would like to take advantage of this Rapid Application Development tool, please contact us for further information.

 Davalen Charts

Q3 so far was highlighted by the Exceptional Web Experiences (aka IBM WebSphere Portal Excellence) conference. Davalen got a chance to feature its work with the Davalen Charts [link] product, which is intended for robust graphic support for Dashboards in Portal. We are actively implementing this solution for healthcare [link] and energy [link] clients and look forward to adapting it to more markets. This solution incorporates many of the features in Web 2.0 to make the charting engine more in tune with graphics support that clients are demanding. The use of animation, 3D, and drill-down capabilities are just a few of the features being used.

At the Portal Conference, IBM announced the release dates of IBM WebSphere Portal and WebSphere Portlet Factory version 7. We have been working with the IBM WebSphere Portlet Factory team and the Davalen Portlet Factory training [link] is available (electronic release of v7 is available now and the media version is available September 24th).

Stay tuned for an advanced Portlet Factory course, which will focus on the GUI design in Portlet Factory and the use of the DOJO and Ajax builders that ship with release 7 of Portlet Factory.

Check out the new Landing Page for Davalen Charts and let us know what you think.
