Dear Friends,

The biggest art fair of the art calendar, Art Basel Miami Beach, wrapped up on Sunday where painting stole the show. 260 galleries at the main fair showed $2.5 billion of art by 2,000+ artists - and that doesn't include art on sale at the myriad satellite fairs. Rumors of Occupy Wall Street-style art protests were unfounded and commerce prevailed.

Is anyone buying art for love anymore? In the last 2 weeks, a Swiss banker-collector and British mega-collector Charles Saatchi have both lamented the hijacking of the art market 'by the very same forces that poisoned the world of finance: herding, greed' and speculation. Saatchi wrote a particularly damning article in the Guardian newspaper in which he calls for a return of a genuine curiosity about art.

They paint a depressing picture and, as as an artist and art advisor at Blue Tangerine Art, my aim is to make art accessible to people who really want to know about art, and help them find quality artworks at affordable prices.

To that end, we introduce you to a new artist at Blue Tangerine Art: Susan Goldsmith, whose gilded images of nature are a complex layering of multiple media.

Keeping artists inspired and on track, our Ignite your Art Career workshop last month was a big success. Stay tuned for more artist workshops in 2012.

Lastly, I am thrilled to announce that my own work is now represented in Los Angeles by Gebert Gallery. Two paintings will be on display at their Winter Group Show, which opens on January 5, 2012. I hope you can make it.

Warm regards,

Trudy Montgomery

Susan Goldsmith Joins Blue Tangerine Art

We are pleased to welcome Susan Goldsmith to the Blue Tangerine Art stable. Working across multiple media, Goldsmith transforms images from nature into gilded gems that incorporate paint, gold and silver metal leafing, photography and resin.

With a background in 2D animation on Hollywood blockbusters including Star Wars and Pirates of The Caribbean, Goldsmith is well-versed in manipulating layers of visual imagery to create the optical illusion of distance and depth. Goldsmith's mastery lies in creating unique pieces that glow with the quiet mysteries of the natural world.

Art critic Peter Frank calls Goldsmith 'an impressionist in reverse'.

Artist Career Workshop: Ignite your Art Career

Thank you to all the artists who attended our Ignite Your Art Career workshop in LA last month. We had a great day!

Here are some of the comments:

"Really enjoyed the seminar. Expressing my needs and concerns on how to improve the business side of my art to other artists was very helpful"
- Olivier Pojzman, Photographer, Los Angeles, CA

"Trudy shared invaluable advice that has given me a new perspective on my art career.  I left this workshop with so much confidence about moving forward in addition to a helpful strategy to do so."
- Kathleen Kaller, Painter, Los Angeles, CA

Stay tuned for artist workshops in LA and San Francisco in 2012.

Painting Headlines At Art Basel Miami
A Happy Medium: Why painting is all over the floor at this year's fair
The Art Newspaper, By Georgina Adam, Charlotte Burns and Riah Pryor. Dec 1, 2011

Miami. A panorama of paintings greeted guests at yesterday's preview of Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB), with two-dimensional works dominating the booths near the VIP entrance and beyond. [...] Three-dimensional works were in abundance last year, but many of this year's offerings come in a frame. Sculpture is more expensive to make, crate and ship-and is slower to sell. Against a backdrop of economic turmoil, is this an indication of a more cautious market? "Painting always sells better than sculpture, and its prices have always been higher, in any period in modern art history,"...
