Dear Friends,
The art world migrates to Europe this summer for the start of the six-month long Venice Biennale and Art Basel, the leading art fair now in its 42nd year, which opens June 15. It's a modern day 'Grand Tour' which some say began in Hong Kong last month at Art HK, a growing contemporary art fair which is grabbing the attention of the West.
I will be attending Art Basel and its satellite fairs next week and I would be delighted to look for art for you. Please email me if you are looking to buy a piece or build on your existing collection.
In London, Blue Tangerine Art's youngest artist, Zanny Mellor, has a painting at the Royal Academy's summer exhibition, on view until August 15th. London Olympic Build 3 has already sold, however limited edition prints are available - please contact us for details.
Very best,
Trudy Montgomery

Art Basel unshackles the mind
Wall Street Journal, June 10
Venice last week, Basel next week: The art world is on the move. Following the opening of the Venice Biennale, which runs until Nov. 27, the focus turns to Art Basel. The world's leading modern and contemporary art fair will run in the Swiss city on the Rhine, nestled between France and Germany, from Wednesday through Sunday. At the Venice Biennale, you look. At Art Basel, you buy. For the fair's 42nd edition, around 300 galleries from 36 countries will bring works by more than 2,500 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. They showcase all forms of art, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, installation and print. Artists range from the stars of the business to emerging faces.

The Venice Effect
Curators of the Biennale have always played down its impact on the art market, but the two go hand-in-hand

When the Venice Biennale was founded in 1895, one of its main goals was to establish a new market for contemporary art. A sales office assisted artists in finding clients and selling their work, a service for which it charged 10% commission. The office was successful: by the end of the first edition, more than half of the works exhibited had been sold. The organisers earned so much in commissions that they were able to donate a handsome amount of cash to charity. Sales remained an intrinsic part of the biennale until 1968,.. Read on...
Germany has been awarded the international exhibition's highest award, the Golden Lion for best national pavilion for its display of work by Christoph Schlingensief. Read on in Art INFO...

Zanny Mellor at Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London
BTA's youngest artist included in this year's exhibition
The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition in London is the largest open contemporary art exhibition in the world, drawing together a wide range of new and recent work by established, unknown and emerging artists. Known for its 'salon-hang', the exhibition is now in its 243rd year having been started in 1769. Zanny Mellor, Blue Tangerine's youngest artist, has been included for the first time in the exhibition. Her painting 'London Olympic Build 3' portrays the energy and dynamism of a city preparing to welcome the Olympic games in 2012. Mellor has recently completed a commission for the Hilton Group in the London Docklands. The San Francisco Triple Fair Affair
By Aimee Le Duc, May 24, 2011

There has been a terrific amount of ballyhoo made about an art fair returning to San Francisco and once people found out there would be three separate fairs this year, minds were being blown from one end of the city to the other. Could San Francisco support one fair, let alone three? How would these events detract or support each other? Why did some galleries commit to one fair or the other and why did some galleries have booths in more than one fair? Did anyone buy anything? So many questions -- with everyone ready to either love or hate the fairs -- it was sure to be anything but a dull weekend.
