Dear Friends,
The Spring contemporary art auctions consumed the art world this month with over $700 million of art sold. Andy Warhol, whose silkscreens dominated all three auction house sales, was the 'unrivaled star' according to the WSJ, while the New York Times commented wryly that, "Substance or style were clearly irrelevant this week. Size and name recognition were enough."
Competition for lots between Sotheby's and Christie's remains fierce and a handful of new world record prices were recorded. Christie's 'sensational' $301million sale put Sotheby's in the shade, despite an exciting sale of New York dealer Allan Stone's collection.
At Blue Tangerine Art, we welcome Lisa Fromartz to our stable and present, 'Amazu', a series of large format mixed media works that address issues from cosmology to politics to mass culture. Fromartz' work is in the collections of MOMA New York and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York.
As May draws to a close, Trudy is attending the three San Francisco Art Fairs (see Art Diary Dates below). Work by six Blue Tangerine artists will be on display: Eric Zener, Kim Frohsin, America Martin, Patter Hellstrom, Sieglinde Van Damme and Terry Thompson.
We have extra tickets so please contact me if you'd like to meet at at the fairs this weekend.
Creatively yours,
Trudy
p.s. Some of you noticed that BTA artists are featured on Houzz.com, an online design ideabook. (Read the new blog article). Thanks for all your comments!

In Contemporary Art Sales, Big is Better and Famous Is Best
New York Auction Round-up
By Souren Melikian, The NY Times, May 13, 2011 | Contemporary art works did well at recent auctions in New York. This Warhol "Self-Portrait" from 1986, sold for $27.52 million. Photo credit: Christie's/NY Times |
NEW YORK - There comes a moment in any market when prices rise so high that professionals wonder how much longer the fluke can last. There is a limit to everything, and at times this week, as the Contemporary art sales continued, that limit did not seem to be very far away.
When Sotheby's held its Monday evening session that dealt with the collection built up by the legendary dealer Allan Stone, the room was carried away. Sotheby's expected the 42 works of art to bring $46.8 million in the best of cases. The score was $54.8 million. Only three insignificant pieces went unsold. Read on...

Lisa Fromartz joins Blue Tangerine Art
No one knows everything
Amazu, the title of Lisa Fromartz' mixed-media series, comes from the Iboid language of Nigeria. It means "no one knows everything." Working in my studio surrounded by the layers of images I've collected, I often think of "The Aleph," a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, in which a man discovers beneath the stairs of a house, a tiny spinning ball, "...a point in space that contains all other points...everything in the universe seen from every angle simultaneously." Collage allows me to merge my interests-from cosmology to politics to mass culture---simultaneously with my thoughts and emotions. Not quite everything in the universe, but no one knows everything. Please see more images in Fromartz' Amazu and Moonraker series online, and contact us for more information on 310 699 6826. |

BTA artists featured in Houzz
Art and Design Idea Book
Opposites attract: Modern Art in Traditional Rooms Houzz.com by Killy Sheer I talk (and write) incessantly about creating "collected" rooms; ones that appear to have evolved over a long period of time. To me, achieving a look that floats timelessly from one generation to another isn't about matching periods, woods and finishes; it's about mixing historic elements with contemporary pieces and layering patterns and textures while maintaining a visual hierarchy. One way (among many) that designers create such a look is by placing modern, abstract art among traditional furnishings. The juxtaposition sets the artwork apart, giving it a moment in the sun, without overshadowing the furniture style. The whole room gets a new freshness. Read the article...
"This dining room provides a wonderful example of how periods overlap beautifully.... oversized but airy chandelier; intricate wainscotting and moldings; and abstract paintings on the far wall tell us there is nothing predictable about the client or the designer." - Kelly Sheer |
