Dear Friends,
The detention of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei on April 3 at Beijing airport has created an international uproar. Museums around the world are pressing for his release. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is leading a petition to the Chinese Minister of Culture.
The issue stands in contrast to the record sales in Hong Kong this week, where Sotheby's sold $447m in Asian art.
At Blue Tangerine Art, we are pleased to introduce British sculptor Stephanie Carlton Smith to our roster. Trained at London's Royal College of Art, Carlton Smith is gathering acclaim in the UK and Dubai for her glass and alabaster structures, which balance fearlessly in the shifting light.
Figurative painter America Martin has released new works on canvas. Her work on paper series of Cool Jazz musicians, which we curated in February, will remain on view throughout 2011 at L'Ermitage Beverly Hills to complement the hotel's ongoing jazz program.
Next month, the contemporary art world focuses on the New York May auctions, considered a bell weather for the health of the art market. Highlights include Andy Warhol's portrait of Elizabeth Taylor at Phillips de Pury; a timely sale perhaps?
We wish you an art-filled spring,
Trudy Montgomery

New BTA Artist: Sculpture by Stephanie Carlton Smith
Blue Tangerine Art is pleased to offer the extraordinary work of British sculptor Stephanie Carlton Smith RA.
Working primarily with glass in multiple forms - glass rods, slabs of plate, even groups of test tubes - which she juxtaposes with other materials in pursuit of balance and harmony, Carlton Smith has an ability to portray a human quality from abstract forms.
"My practice is driven foremost by my relationship with glass as a material that defines space and expresses aspects of the human psyche," explains Carlton Smith. "The recurring imagery within my work has to be the containment of the fragmented interior representing our fractured core and the beauty its complexity can present.
These human associations can also be found within the materials with which the glass is juxtaposed. Alabaster is used to form both a symbolic and literal skin in which to hold the fractured glass and the play between material and form resonates with the viewer." Read on...
Generally working on a domestic scale, Stephanie has worked on some important site-specific commissions for both indoor and outdoor display, including at scale. Please contact us for more information and to discuss options. |

America Martin has just released fresh new paintings on canvas. Her luscious use of paint and confident line underpin her signature style that is both bold and fun. A great way to celebrate the summer!
And, still on view at L'Ermitage in Beverly Hills , America Martin's series of works on paper playfully capture the cool jazz vibe led by singer Claude Hall on Thursday nights. |
Asian Art snapped up in Hong Kong Sothebys sells record $447m in Asian Art
Reuters, May 11, 2011
Auction giant Sotheby's sold $447 million worth of Asian art, wine, watches and jewellery in its Asian spring sales, in another bullish showing for the Chinese art market despite weak results for a monumental collection of Chinese ceramics.
The HK$3.49 billion tally for its 8-day Asian sales in Hong Kong -- now considered the world's third most important art auction hub after New York and London, was the firm's best season ever underpinned by strong Chinese buyers -- eclipsing even its blockbuster $400 million autumn season last October.
