Dear Friends and Clients,
The art world convened last week at the ninth edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, and its constellation of satellite fairs. This year more than 250 galleries exhibited 20th and 21st century artworks by over 2,000 artists. Word at the fair is that the market is back to 2007 levels, and dealers reported positive sales, but overall it was felt that the fair did not reach its full potential.
Nevertheless the speculative heat has gone out of the market, although art is still being viewed as a safe place to park money - if you make artist selections wisely.
In the UK Britain's most prestigious art prize has been awarded, for the first time in its 26 year history, for a sound installation. Emotionally the piece seems to have a calming, contemplative effect on the viewer. Read my (first) blog post in the Huffington Post arts section with my impressions of Susan Philipsz' 2010 Turner Prize-winning sound sculpture.
And in Blue Tangerine Art news, I am curating an exhibit of California artists at the hotel L'Ermitage Beverly Hills in January. The show coincides with Los Angeles Art Month and will include an opening reception that will showcase a selection of our artists.
It's not too late to give the gift of art this season. Contact us for ideas- we'll send you a shortlist of paintings, prints and photographs within your budget and help you make someone happy!
Wishing you a very happy and healthy holiday season, Trudy Montgomery

At Art Basel Miami Beach, Less Heat
By Kate Taylor, New York Times December 2, 2010
MIAMI BEACH - The crowds that used to form more than an hour before the opening of the "First Choice" portion of Art Basel Miami Beach-the four-hour window between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. when only elite collectors can enter and browse the fair-are gone. Gone too are the speculators who before the financial crisis used to race down the aisles as soon as the doors opened in order to snag a work that they thought they could flip at a profit a few months later. Indeed, on Wednesday during "First Choice" things seemed sedate compared to the years before 2008. Some described the giant convention hall as "empty."
That doesn't mean that things didn't sell. The extreme caution and modesty of 2008 and 2009, the hesitation to be seen spending, is gone, too. Pay in the financial world is roaring back to pre-crisis levels, and art is increasingly seen as a safe place to park money, like gold. Read the article...

Tate Britain's Turner Prize 2010 awarded to a Sound Sculptor for the first time
Huffington Post, Dec 10, 2010 by Trudy Montgomery
If you're hardy enough to brace London's icy cold snap to visit the 2010 Turner Prize exhibition at Tate Britain, don't be disappointed to find there's no art to see when you get there. The room dedicated to displaying the work of this year's winning artist is empty - except for three speakers and a surprisingly comfortable wooden bench.
Expect, instead, to hear it. Britain's most prestigious art prize has been awarded, for the first time in its 26 year history, for a sound installation. Miuccia Prada awarded the £25,000 ($40,000) prize money this week to Susan Philipsz, a Scottish artist living and working in Berlin who calls herself a sound sculptor. Philipsz is only the fourth woman to be awarded the prize in its 26 year history.
