Dear Friends and Clients,

Greetings from LA! With London's June auctions behind us and summer in full swing, the art world is on summer hiatus, offering the perfect opportunity to view museum and gallery exhibitions (see left).

Over the last two years, art market confidence has taken a severe knock to say the least. ArtPrice takes the pulse of the current art market and, happily, reveals a return of collector confidence as buying opportunities present themselves.

Even Obama is taking advantage of the cache of contemporary art. The president staged a diplomatic coup when he gifted British Prime Minister, David Cameron, an Ed Rucha lithograph. Cameron reciprocated with a work by British 'street artist' Ben Eine.

At Blue Tangerine Art, we welcome Colombian-American artist America Martin to our stable. Her confident line drawing reduces the human form to a deceptive simplicity, and each figure is dynamically placed within the rectangle. Read our interview with America about her paintings.

In more BTA news, Danish artist Birgitte Lund has completed 10 new small paintings that we have received from Denmark this month. Please call us at 310-774-1959 to book an appointment to see her work while it is still available.

Lastly, check out BTA artist Allison Hunter's work in The New Yorker blog slide show posted this week (scroll to the second image).

Happy summer!

Warm wishes,

Trudy Montgomery

The story behind Obama's art gift
Contemporary art gifting a new currency for goodwill

Ed Rucha - Speedlines
President Obama staged a diplomatic coup when he gave (British Prime Minister) David Cameron an Ed Ruscha lithograph, worth an estimated $7,000.

Obama gave Cameron Column With Speed Lines, a patriotically colored lithograph by Nebraska-born painter Ed Ruscha, who is considered a quintessential Los Angeles artist and is, as the official White House statement noted, "one of the most influential American artists of the 20th century Pop art movement."

(...)"The exchange indicates a new moment for contemporary art. It signifies that art is a currency for gratitude and esteem, and that these works are measurable national treasures."

AMCI: taking the pulse of the art market...

Art Market Insight, ArtPrice, July 10, 2010

The health of the art market is substantially correlated to that of the global economy. However, in order to obtain a more accurate picture of the market's mood and to provide a real-time indicator of its trends, ArtPrice launched its art market confidence indicator (AMCI) at the start of 2008.

The index is based on responses by key market players to questions on their buying intentions, their perception of the condition of the art market and their appreciation of the current and future economic situation.

New Blue Tangerine Art Artist:
America Martin

America Martin is a Colombian-American fine artist based in Los Angeles. A traveler between mediums, America moves seamlessly between painting and sculpture and is relentless in the conquest of new terrain. Her favorite landscape is that of the human form, her work is distinguished by a command of line and color, making playful reference to both classic and indigenous art forms.

Read our interview with the artist about her approach to figurative painting.
