Dear Friends and Clients,
Art Basel is over and the London summer art auctions have begun. Despite Europe's recession-related debts, high quality paintings by Manet and Picasso commanded huge prices at London Sotheby's and Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art auctions. Attention will be on the Postwar and Contemporary sales this week, which include some notable lots.
The record breaking Picasso sale at $106.5 million in New York last month was a well-timed boost for the annual Art Basel fair this month. Art sales were brisk for blue-chip art and strong across the board, although buyers are being more selective than in the boom years. Read more on Basel and its satellite fairs: Volta, Art Statements.
At Blue Tangerine Art, we continue to work with a wide range of emerging, mid-career and established artists from around the world. Please see some of our recent client projects.
Lastly, we note the passing of celebrated French-born American sculptor Louise Bourgeois who died late May at 98. Bourgeois is recognized today as the founder of confessional art, and best known for her contributions to feminist art. Her legacy and influence upon young artists, particularly women, will live on.
May your summer be art-filled!
Warm wishes, Trudy Montgomery

Christie's
Sells Picasso for $51.2 Million
WSJ, June 23, 2010 By Kelly Crow
Andrew Lloyd Webber's
charity sold a haunting Pablo Picasso portrait for
GPB 34.7 million ($51.2 million) at Christie's in London on Wednesday,
four years after heirs of the artwork's first owner claimed the painting
had been sold under pressure by the Nazis.
The Andrew
Lloyd Webber Foundation was given permission to offer up the
1903 work, "Portrait d'Angel Fernandez de Soto," after settling
privately with the heirs of German banker Paul von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
a few months ago. Mr. Webber paid Christie's $29.1 million for the
Blue-Period portrait of the artist's friend in 1995. This time around,
the auction house priced it to sell for at least £30 million, or $44
million. Read on... |

The Buzz in Basel: Art, Alive and Well and Selling Briskly
NY Times, June 17, 2010 By Carol Vogel
BASEL, Switzerland - Minutes after a limestone head by Modigliani sold for $52.6 million at a Christie's
auction in Paris on Monday, word spread to the collectors arriving here
for the annual art fair. And everyone wanted the details.
Who bought the work - a sculpture from 1910-12 - which was just two feet
tall and had been estimated at only $4.8 million to $7.2 million? A
mysterious telephone bidder, was all officials at Christie's would say.
The huge price - in a season of huge auction prices - may not be in the
same league as the record-breaking $106.5 million paid for a Picasso painting in New York last month, but the French sale was a conveniently
timed confidence booster for Art Basel, the
holy grail of contemporary art fairs that opened here on Thursday.

Louise Bourgeois, Influential Sculptor, Dies at 98
NY Times, May 31, 2010 By Holland Cotter
Louise Bourgeois | Louise Bourgeois, the French-born American artist who gained fame only late
in a long career, when her psychologically charged abstract sculptures,
drawings and prints had a galvanizing effect on the work of younger
artists, particularly women, died on Monday in Manhattan, where she
lived. She was 98. Read more... |
