Dear Friends and Clients,

Welcome to our April newsletter. With the New York auctions around the corner the art world is watching for signs that the early buds of Spring will indeed bloom.

Collectors at last month's fourth annual Art Dubai were buying work by emerging artists from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. With the changing times and re-focused market, Art Dubai has evolved into a more regional niche, reflecting a wider trend in the art market. The blue chip Western galleries White Cube and Gagosian were noticeably absent having pulled out after participating in past years when the Emirates were booming.

Art news in New York: celebrated British sculptor Antony Gormley has an outdoor exhibition, Event Horizon, where 31 six foot iron and fiberglass sculptures, bodycasts of Gormley, are placed on rooftops, ledges and at ground level around Madison Square Park. The former Turner-prize winner last shared his sculptures in an urban setting around London's Heyward Gallery in 2006.

In the Blue Tangerine Art studio, artists and curators Trudy Montgomery and
Patter Hellstrom are engaging in a 30-day visual conversation to explore the influences and inspirations that underpin the creative process.

With art fair season well underway, next month San Francisco welcomes the return of the San Francisco Fine Art Fair, May 21-23. Meanwhile, collectors, dealers and artists worldwide prepare for Art Basel, Switzerland, June 16-20. I will be attending both events and look forward to scheduling appointments with you in the coming weeks.

Warm wishes,

Trudy Montgomery

At Art Dubai, Glimpses of an Evolving Market

Artinfo by Jyoti Dhar,  April 2, 2010

This year's Art Dubai, the fourth edition of the much-watched Middle Eastern art fair, was notable for the absence of several Western art galleries - White Cube, Gagosian, and Ben Brown among them - that had reconnoitered the emerging market in flusher times, only to pull out when the winds changed. But among the booths of the emirate's art bazaar last month, the overall impression was one of growth, not diminution. In contrast to other ambitious fairs that have sought to branch out internationally in recent years, Art Dubai has followed a different path, maturing into a more regional niche.

From March 26 - August 15, 2010, Madison Avenue Square Art, part of Madison Square Park Conservancy, will present Antony Gormley's first US public art project - EVENT HORIZON.

Thirty-one life-size body forms of the artist cast in iron and fiberglass will inhabit the pathways and sidewalks of historic Madison Square Park as well as the rooftops of the architectural treasures that populate New York's vibrant Flatiron District.

Drawing and influence by Trudy Montgomery

Blue Tangerine Art's very own Trudy Montgomery and Patter Hellstrom have embarked on a month-long, daily visual conversation across California, working from their respective studio locations in San Francisco and Los Angeles. This digitally facilitated project is an opportunity for two abstract artists to explore studio practices that underpin their art-making and creative process. This project affords both artists the chance to dissect studio rituals while discussing results, moving both artists into the next level of understanding in their work.

The project is nearing completion so watch for more documentation next month.
