Dear Friends and Clients,

This month we are delighted to introduce the abstract paintings of Bjornulf Dyrud. Widely acknowledged in his native Norway, yet little known outside Scandinavia, Dyrud's gestural, lyrical paintings reveal a mysterious landscape, unknown on earth.

We also feature artist Eric Zener, whose resin mixed media pieces of figures suspended in water were recently profiled in the Artist's magazine.

In the international art market, Art Basel opened strongly despite fears of the credit crunch. In London, the recent art auctions sales were stronger than expected, although significantly depreciated compared to hammer prices a year ago. With fewer really great works coming to auction, Auction houses are finding difficulty in persuading collectors to part with their best work.

Blue Tangerine Art is pleased to present Bjornulf Dyrud, a Norwegian abstract painter largely unknown outside Scandinavia.

Dyrud's lyrical, gestural style is grounded in his rigorous training in music, eurythmy, and other art forms. While Dyrud's starting point is nature and the landscape, it is his very personal interpretation and expression of the natural and spiritual worlds, that define his paintings. His work is widely acknowledged in Norway as both uniquely individual and of the highest artistic standard.

Dyrud has experimented widely with different media and he has acquired a rich technical register which he draws on to support his imagination. He works with oil, acrylics, gouache, leaf metal and sand on canvas and wood surfaces, employing various tempera techniques including scraping, pouring and layering, to build up the surface. In so doing, Dyrud creates a veiled imagery with depth, presence and mystery.

Suspended in Water

Eric Zener - Blue Caress

Eric Zener's figures in water are widely appreciated both here and abroad.  His work is allegorical, suggesting the multiple layers of life, its transitions and tensions.

"The lone figure immersed in water illustrates the constant force and changing tides in our lives. Above the surface we may appear to be together and unaffected; however, below the surface, subconsciously, we are in a constant state of transformation and illumination," Eric Zener says.

Primarily an oil painter, Zener is also pioneering new techniques with resin, which he layers with gold and silver leaf leaf, film, and paint.  Read the article on Eric Zener's process in Artist's Magazine.

London Summer Auction Results
Summer Auctions Feel a Chill

JeffKoons
The recent art auctions in London, revealed a downward trend in the quality, number of lots and total value of works sold compared to the highs of last summer.

Impressionist and modern art sales figures fell from £298m last year to £96m this year. This is partly due to the fall in the number of lots (930 to 450) but the key factor was the number of high value 'masterpieces' has fallen further. London's Telegraph notes that Auction houses are having difficulty in persuading collectors to part with quality works in the absence of guarantees, as well as due to the general volatility of other asset classes.

This trend also applied to the contemporary art auctions, with Sotheby's and Christies offering slimmer pickings with just 40 lots total and only a handful of really great quality works. Despite auction estimates reflecting a new financial reality, works by Peter Doig, Alexander Calder and Andy Warhol were clear winners.

Listen to a podcast in which Richard Polsky, art dealer and author, shares his thoughts on the results of the contemporary art auctions (as published by Art Tactic).
