Dear Friends and Clients,

This month we are delighted to introduce the emerging talent of Sebastian Davila, a Colombian-born photographer now living in the US.  In his new series, 'A definite length of time', Davila captures the fleeting stillness we often find so hard to capture within the rapid pace of urban life.  By freeze-framing moments of isolation and ambiguity, Davila asks us to Pause to review the meaning (or meaninglessness) of our existence.

Artists may be interested in Trudy's Top 10 Tips to support their personal studio practice which she presented at a recent workshop for teaching artists in San Francisco as part of the Arts Providers Alliance 2009 series 'Conversations in Community Arts and Arts Education Professional Development'

Further afield, Art Basel opens this week on the heels of the Venice Biennale. All art world eyes are on the Continent for reassurance on the health of the art market.

"Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it." Robert Motherwell

Urban society is so competitive there is hardly any time to stop and think. It seems that we always have to be doing something and whatever it is we are doing has to be done fast so that we can start doing something else as soon as we finish.

Sebastian Davila's photography captures the moments in which people are lost in thought or daydreaming.  In 'a definite length of time', a new series of long format photographs, Davila appears to stop the clock on our busy lives as we rush from place to place, apparently losing ourselves in the process.

In each 'Pause', Davila presents strangers isolated against the backdrop of urban architecture - expansive concrete walls interrupted with fire hydrants, parking meters, lamp posts. Such spaces appear to reflect and amplify the isolation of our our existence in a manufactured world.

The results are striking, sometimes humorous, with an unknown narrative at play.

"We isolate ourselves creating our own worlds; spaces to help us accept the ambiguity of our existence," explains Davila. "I photograph people who seem to be lost in thought or daydreaming. People who might be asking themselves questions they already know they will find no answers to."

Career Inspiration for Teaching Artists
Arts Educator Workshop

In May, Trudy led a workshop for arts educators, hosted by the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC), the city agency that champions the arts.  The workshop was designed to support teaching artists in identifying how to re-energize their personal art practice and help them excel in both the studio and in the classroom.

Trudy inspired participants with her Top 10 Artist Tips to Strengthen Your Studio Practice, and encouraged them to declare and commit to a new personal career goal.

"This workshop helped me critically examine my motivation for the work that I do and become articulate about where I want to go within my career. Thank you!" - M. Ender., Artist and Arts Educator.

"Your strength for sure is to get the group to look at their own blocks. Empowering!" - Artist and Arts Educator.
