Dear Friends and Clients,

As contemporary art advisors, we aim to introduce you to new artists and keep you updated on the latest art market trends, exhibitions and happenings.

This month we feature flow paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Suzan Woodruff.  Walking the thin line between control and chaos, Woodruff creates elegant abstractions that seem to capture the dynamism of natural phenomena.  Read about her inspiration and process in our interview with the artist.

Also this month, Trudy leads a workshop for arts educators as part of the Arts Education Program run by the San Francisco Arts Commission, the City Agency that champions the arts in San Francisco.

We look forward to helping you find just what you're looking for, and to hosting you at our gallery space in SOMA San Francisco.

"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life"  - Picasso.

Natural Flow

Suzan Woodruff - Little DeepSuzan Woodruff creates elegant abstractions that seem to capture the dynamism of natural phenomena. Her work ranges in imagery from Turneresque sunsets to sedate sunsets to turbulent tornadoes, but each piece appears to reveal the meteorological or geological mysteries of nature.

The extraordinary effects Woodruff achieves are testament to her process.

By controlling the direction of the paint on the surface, and at the same time working with mistakes, Woodruff allows gravity and physical force to make mysterious patterns.

"I control the direction [of the paint] just by spinning it, flipping it, tipping it, spraying it, using gravity. It separates the heavier pigments from the light pigments. It looks like something made in nature, the same way you watch water from the ocean pull back sand with the waves, or when you look at the sky and see the clouds being pushed by the wind."

SFAC Workshop for Arts Educators
Creative Inspiration for Teaching Artists

SFAC logoThe San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC), the city agency that champions the arts in San Francisco, has invited Blue Tangerine Art's founder, Trudy Montgomery, to participate in its Arts Education program. In a workshop designed to inspire and re-energize arts educators, Trudy will support teaching artists in identifying how to invigorate their personal art practice and help them excel as both an artist and in their teaching career.

The event takes place at SomArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 on May 14 from 5:30pm-7.30pm. Please register here if you are an arts educator and would like to attend the session.

This Arts Providers Alliance event, part of the Conversations in Community Arts and Arts Education Professional Development Series 2009, is hosted in collaboration with the San Francisco Arts Commission and sponsored by the Zellerbach Family Foundation and Intersection for the Arts.

Using Works of Art to Secure Loans
Fine Art as Collatoral

The art market has stood up reasonably well in the current financial turmoil, while the value of other asset classes has fallen dramatically. It is, of course, the value of those other assets that is at the centre of the credit crisis. It is therefore perhaps unsurprising that unprecedented numbers of works of art are now being used as security for loans. Reports suggest that lending in this area is up between 40% to 50% in the past six months.

People from every stratum of society who need liquidity are looking to see what cash value their assets may have. With traditional forms of investment income from property and stock markets in the doldrums, art is becoming an increasingly viable option to use as collateral for loans.
